Deaton Makes First Indoor World Cup Podium in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Thailand - Competition was fierce at the second stage of the Indoor Archery World Cup with many Korean company teams entered and the growing popularity of the event drawing top competitors worldwide.

Bridger Deaton picked up his first Indoor Archery World Cup medal taking silver in a very close 148-146 match with the Netherlands' Mike Schloesser. After a two point defecit in the first end, the two matched arrow for arrow for the remainder of the match giving Schloesser the compound men's gold.

Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) was the leading U.S. scorer in the compound men's qualification, ranking 3rd with 590. Logan Wilde (West Jordan, Utah) and Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa) were right behind finishing 9th and 10th with 587 and 586. The Wildes were both upset in the 1/8th elimination as Logan fell 147-146 to the 25th seed from China and Reo came up just short 146-148 to the 14th seed from Spain. Brad Rega (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) finished 42nd.

Dahlia Crook (Piedmont, Kansas) qualified 8th and shot strong matches through to the quarterfinal where she faced top seed Natalia Avdeeva of Russia and fell 143-146. USA's Kali Pavlik (Crofton, Nebraska) and Lexi Keller (Omro, Wisconsin) qualified 12th and 19th respectively and both were eliminated in the 1/16th round. Bernadette Diab (Toms River, New Jersey), ranked 20th, upset Thailand's Junsook in the 1/16th before falling to eventual gold medal winner Sarah Prieels of Great Britain in the 1/8th.

For the recurve women's competition, Khatuna Lorig (Aurora, Colorado) was the only archer not from Korea to qualify in the top 13 as she ranked 11th. In eliminations, she upset 6th seed Hyebhin Ju 6-4 and was again the only archer not from Korea in the quarterfinals. Facing No. 3 seed Hunyoung Jeon, the two went to a 5-5 tie and one-arrow shoot off. Both shot 9s, but it was Jeon who advanced to the semifinals.

Laura Bennett Shelton (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) and Olga Usherenko (Oakland, New Jersey) qualified 26th and 31st respectively, making the cut for eliminations, but both were knocked out in the first match 6-0 to higher seeded archers. John Daugherty Jr. was the sole U.S. entrant in the recurve men's competition and he finished 94th.
