ESSEN, Germany – Archery competition gets underway on Tuesday at the 2025 World University Games in Germany, with 12 athletes representing the U.S.A.
Olympian Catalina GNoriega is among those sporting the red, white and blue. The student athlete is joined by four others from Texas A&M - Trenton Cowles, Alex Gilliam, Venugopal Kunnavakkum (all recurve men) and Ryan Booth (compound men).
Joining GNoriega on the recurve women’s team is Columbia University’s Eunice Choi and Grace Lum (University of California, Davis). Choi’s collegiate teammate, Sydney Sullenberger, is part of the compound women’s trio of Danielle Woodie (University of the Cumberlands) and Leann Drake (State Fair Community.
From competing on the U.S. team at the World Cup Stage 4 in Madrid, Spain to arriving in Germany, 21-year-old Sullenberger has been in the Netherlands training with her Columbia teammate Giselle De Sousa, who will be representing Portugal.
Booth is joined in the compound men’s team (pictured above) by Colton Green (University of Rio Grande) and Turner Nevitt (Lindsey Wilson University).
This is a U.S. team with its fair share of experience on the international stage. GNoriega, as mentioned, is an Olympian having competed at the Paris Games last summer. She has also won a recurve women’s team gold, silver and bronze medal at World Cup stages this year. Cowles was part of the recurve men’s team to win silver in Madrid earlier this month.
In Sullenberger and Drake the U.S. has medalists from the 2023 World Archery Youth Championships. Woodie, meanwhile, was part of the University of the Cumberlands team to regain the Overall National Team Championship at the 2025 HotelPlanner USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals in May.
First up on Tuesday will be the qualification rounds for both recurve men and compound women. That is followed in the afternoon session by recurve women and compound men. Elimination matches take place on Wednesday, through the quarterfinal matches.
Team elimination matches will be on Thursday, through the semifinals. The medal matches in the team competition take center stage on Friday, with individual medals decided on Saturday.
