ASUNCION, Paraguay – Four of the USA’s top young archers are in the Paraguay capital for the second Junior Pan American Games.
All four athletes in South America for the Junior Pan Am Games will also be north of the border later this month for the World Archery Youth Championships in Canada.
Emma Kim and Jack Krengel lead the line in the recurve division, with Kaylee Gurney (pictured) and Zack Neilson competing in compound. The archery portion of the Games runs from Saturday to Tuesday.
At the recent Rebel Gear Buckeye Classic, Kim was knocked out by eventual bronze medalist Olivia Martin, the fourth seed, in recurve women. She was a silver medalist at the 2024 AAE Arizona Cup, defeating Catalina GNoriega along the way, and finished fourth at last year’s Easton Foundations Gator Cup.
Gurney, meanwhile, has had an impressive year, winning the USA Archery Indoor Nationals Final and taking bronze at Arizona Cup, both in (senior) compound women.
Krengel was fifth seed in senior recurve men at the Easton Foundations SoCal Showdown, having won gold in recurve U21 men at Gator Cup and bronze at Arizona Cup.
Neilson also competes at the senior level, in the compound division. A freshman at the University of the Cumberlands, he was involved at the Gator Cup – where he was beaten by eventual gold medalist Mike Schloesser – and Buckeye Classic.
The inaugural Junior Pan Am Games were in Colombia in 2021, from which the USA returned with two gold, three silver and one bronze. Trenton Cowles was a double gold medalist, claiming victory in recurve men and along with Casey Kaufhold in recurve mixed team.
Official practice takes place on Saturday. Competition begins on Sunday with qualification in both recurve and compound, followed by mixed team eliminations up to the semifinals.
