University of Pikeville Archery Offers Generous Scholarships for Juniors at JOAD Nationals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky has generously created a scholarship opportunity for the top junior finishers at this week's 2018 JOAD National Target Championships. The top three male and female recurve, compound and barebow finishers in the elimination rounds of the JOAD Nationals will be eligible to accept these scholarships.

Over 700 of the most promising youth athletes across the country will compete in Raleigh, North Carolina this week for national champion titles. In addition, Gold medalists will be offered a $20,000 scholarship over four years to attend UPike, and silver and bronze medalists will earn $17,500 and $15,000 scholarships respectively.

UPike Head Coach Shane Hurt commented: "Recruiting from the JOAD program, I believe, will give the best prepared archers in High School an opportunity to attend college as a USA Archery collegiate athlete. It will be a place they can rise to their full potential. JOAD has them ready to transition into Collegiate Archery as good, or better, than any other programs. They will be coachable and ready to compete right away."

UPike Archery has seen great success in competition. The team practices for an hour and a half to two hours each day, five days each week. "We will have about 25 student athletes this year with more to follow. The university administration is in full support of this program and we passionately want to put someone from our program on an Olympic team."

For archers interested in the UPike Archery team, Coach Hurt is actively interested in recruiting promising upcoming JOAD archers. "I am interested in smart, driven individuals. Not someone who just plugs into the status quo. I want people who are themselves. Grades are very important to me as I believe that dedication in the classroom is a precursor to their dedication to archery. They need to be good people and teammates, willing to cheer on a teammate even when they themselves are having an off day."
