Ellison Earns Silver in World Games Field Archery Event

CALI, Colombia - No one captures the greatness of the 2013 World Games better than Brady Ellison (Chula Vista, Calif.) who explained that he was excited to compete because "it's one of the multisports events, along with the Olympics and the Pan American Games. It will be cool to come down here and try to win the World Games." Before competition began he reported, "I have high expectations for this one. "

His high hopes and positive thinking must have helped because after the first day of the recurve and barebow field qualification round at the unmarked courses, he climbed to the top of the scoreboard and finished first after the marked courses as well. Current world field champion, Jean-Charles Valladont of France was in first for most of the first day but fell to third. He finished qualifications in second, only a point behind Ellison.

The spread of results on the women's recurve side was much larger. Elena Richter of Germany had a fair lead after the unmarked courses over Naomi Folkard of Great Britain, which held through the marked distances. USA's Heather Koehl (Sheboygan Falls, Wa.) was 8th after the first day but finished qualifications in 9th.

Defending World Games winners, Italy's Eleonora Strobbe  and Giuseppe Seimandi dominated the barebow divisions. Strobbe took an early lead and barely looked back, qualifying first. Seimandi also finished first in qualifications for the men.

Team USA's Benny Rogers had a stellar comeback the second day of qualification at the marked distances, ranking 4th, which pulled him up the leaderboard to finish 9th after a difficult first day. For the women, Charlene Trafford (Shreveport, La.) shot her way to qualify 10th for the US.

The top four archers in each category advanced to semi-final matches in very cloudy weather. Ellison faced Heribert Dornhofer of Austria and gained an easy victory. Valladont was a fiercer opponent for Ellison in the gold match, clinching victory. Ellison left his first international field competition with the silver medal, looking forward to future competitions and a chance to chase Valladont perhaps at the next World Archery Field Championships.
