Defending champions seeking repeat success at Outdoor Nationals in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  The great and the good gather at Allison Sports Town this week for the 141st USA Archery Target Nationals & U.S. Open, with competition getting underway on Friday.

Returning to defend their national titles will be Brady Ellison, Casey Kaufhold, Mark Williams, Jamie McCarrison, Thomas Stevenson Jr., Janet Flenner, Larry Anderson, Diana LaBeau (all recurve), Paige Pearce, Kenneth Brunko, Sharon Totton, Chet Mainwaring (all compound), Zackary Bisinger, Maggie Brensinger, Barbara Carroll, Harold Rush (all barebow), Karen Sternfeld (recurve open women), Benjamin Thompson (compound open men), Wendy Gardner (compound open women) and Jason Tabansky (W1 Open).

Totton, Mainwaring and Rush all face a more congested field this year in their respective divisions, while the compound men will include world champion and former long-time world number one, Reo Wilde, among their numbers.

Kaufhold, meanwhile, will be looking to add to gold medals previously won at the USA Archery Target Nationals and U.S. Open. She first claimed the senior recurve women’s division seven years ago, aged 14, when edging Mackenzie Brown by just one point after two days of competition (1305-1304).

Since 2007, Ellison has won 16 of the 18 USA Archery Target Nationals in recurve men. He missed one year due to the Beijing Olympics and also placed second behind Jake Kaminski.

Williams, LaBeau and Anderson have also been dominant in their respective divisions. Janis Grellner, on top for so long in recurve 50+ women, will be keen to recapture the national title in her home state of Missouri, after taking silver last year, behind Jamie McCarrison.

The U.S. Open takes place on Sunday, with the culmination being senior gold medal matches involving barebow, compound and recurve. These matches will be broadcast live on USA Archery’s YouTube channel from 2pm CT.
