USAT Archers Shine at Costa Rica Cup

SAN JOS, Costa Rica - The Senior United States Archery Team and several additional US archers traveled to Costa Rica to compete this week in the Copa Costa Rica Cup.  With archers competing from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, Argentina and Costa Rica, the team from the US battled fiercely for podium finishes.

Olympian Vic Wunderle (San Antonio, Tex.) clinched gold for the recurve men after qualifying second. Jeremiah Cusick (Chula Vista, Calif.), one of the strongest US male recurve archers this season, once again proved himself finishing with silver in a very close final match, after he topped qualifications with a wide margin over any other score on the field. Resident Athlete Nick Kale (Chula Vista, Calif.) finished fourth in both the FITA round and the eliminations.

Mackenzie Brown (Chula Vista, Calif.) dominated the recurve women's bracket, finishing with gold, following a first place FITA score for juniors. Erin Mickelberry (Bothell, Wa.) represented the United States for the recurve women proudly, finishing first in qualifications and ultimately bringing home bronze in the final match.

Garrett Abernethy (Aiken, S.C.) had his best performance of the year, won gold after qualifying first for compound men ahead of Joshua Binger (Sandy Hook, Conn.) who finished both the eliminations and the FITA round in second.

The compound women's podium was all stars and stripes after qualification, with Brittany Lorenti (Trumbull, Conn.) qualifying first over Kendal Nicely (Gorham, Maine).  Paige Pearce (Red Bluff, Calif.) dominated the junior compound women's qualification round finishing first.

In eliminations, Lorenti continued to outshoot the competition and finished first. Pearce defeated Nicely for the bronze. Pearce also clinched gold in the finals for compound junior women.

Several other American archers elected to compete in this open international event. Paden Tuggle (Atlanta, Ga.) qualified second for the cadet compound men and won bronze in the final matches.

For junior recurve men, John Pooley (Norwood, Ma.) came from behind with a fourth place qualifying score to win gold, while Matthew Twombly (Conifer, Col.) won bronze after qualifiying second.

Coach Laval Falks (Mount Juliet, Tn.) has traveled far for Team USA over the past few years, and this week stepped forward to the shooting line in the compound masters division. He finished the eliminations and qualification round in fifth place. Rockie Rombalski (Atlanta, Ga.) also competed.
