Early Bird registration runs through this Sunday, June 15.

The second session of the 2025 Virtual Symposium brings one such guest, whose expertise will resonate across the sporting spectrum.

Dr. Chris Button is a professor and the dean of the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Sciences at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He received his PhD in sport and exercise science in 2000 from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. His doctoral research focused on coordination and interception skills and applying ecological concepts to the study of interceptive actions.

His session on July 8 is called The Ecological Edge: An Ecological Dynamics Approach to Athlete Development.

He said, “Learning to perform a skill well is not just a matter of repeating the same action over and over. In this talk, learn how the latest motor learning research is bringing about a paradigm shift in how athletes practice.

“Give your athletes and yourself the ecological edge (by learning) the key coaching principles that underpin the ecological dynamics approach to athlete development.”

Button is accredited as a biomechanist through Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand. He regularly works with the coaches and athletes of High-Performance New Zealand and has provided sport science support in netball, soccer, swimming and motor sports.

Dr. Button’s session will discuss how to:

  • Revolutionize your coaching approach by discovering the foundational principles of ecological dynamics, a cutting-edge scientific framework that will transform how you design practice and understand athlete learning in sport.
  • Optimize athlete development by learning how to leverage concepts like functional variability and perception-action coupling to create more effective training environments.
  • Gain actionable strategies and insights on how to apply key concepts such as degrees of freedom and representative design in your coaching to enhance athlete performance.

Button has published his research in a variety of books and journals on sport science, pedagogy, and movement science. Such topics have attracted interest within both scientific and political circles, as evidenced by recent invitations to provide expertise for the New Zealand Ministry of Health, Water Safety New Zealand, High Performance Sport New Zealand, and others.

The second guest speaker scheduled for July 8 is international judge Megan Tierney. Megan has been an international archery judge since 2017 and was selected as a judge for last year’s Paralympic Games in Paris.

She will bring all that experience to her discussion, which will look at Judging Para Archery: Classification, Equipment & Rules. Megan is the Chair of the Para Archery Committee with World Archery Americas.
