Eleven down, seven to go as Indoor Nationals and JOAD Indoor Nationals head down the final stretch

Indoor Nationals and JOAD Indoor Nationals moves to the penultimate weekend of action across the country, with events in California (for a third time), Illinois, Massachusetts and Minnesota.

After this weekend, all that remains of this year’s Indoor Nationals and JOAD Indoor Nationals will be competition in Michigan, Mississippi and Virginia. With seven of the 18 events still to play out, there remains plenty of opportunity for rankings to change across all divisions.

There will not be a USA Archery Indoor Final in 2026, but rather prize money will be distributed based on the final combined results from all Indoor Nationals locations for each gender and division (bow type). Previously, prize money has been for those in the top six. For 2026, there will be prize money for the top 10.

Former world number ranked archer in compound men, Dave Cousins, is among more than 400 athletes gearing up to compete at Indoor Nationals in Fiskdale, Ma., as is double World Archery Youth Championships gold medalist, Dewey Hathaway, also in the compound division.

Two points separates the top three in compound men, with Kyle Douglas currently in the gold medal position with a score of 1195. Fourth to 10th have just five points between them.

Expect 16-year-old Medina Otajagic - silver medalist at last year's USA Archery Indoor Nationals Final - to force her way into the top 10 of barebow women. Topping the rankings there is 17-year-old, Ava Jones, with the next best some 62 points behind.

If Otajagic (pictured above) represents the youth on display, then Candice Raines certainly brings the sporting experience. The recurve archer has shone bright on the international stage, being a member of the US Archery Biathlon Team from 1996-2001 and US Ski Orienteering Team between 1998-2009. Husband Thayer will also be on the line in Fiskdale.

Among those taking part in Wheaton, Ill. over the coming days will be another husband and wife pairing in Matthew and Savannah Nofel. Matthew was a team silver medalist at the 2021 World Archery Championships and also placed on the podium at the previous two World Archery Field Championships. Savannah’s career highlights to date include team golds at the 2019 World Archery Youth Championships and at World Cup Stage 2 in Switzerland in 2021.

Alex de Vera is also competing in Illinois and may challenge the top 10 scores in barebow men. The 2024 Gator Cup silver medalist needs to score more than 1060 to break into the top 10, with Zackary Bisinger still setting the pace with his score of 1096 at the start of the month.
