Nichols, Lorig Set for Women's Individual Competition Tuesday

After two days off, the two U.S. women archers will be back in action Tuesday in the Individual Elimination Round at the Beijing Olympic Green Archery Field at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Jenny Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) and Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, Calif. / Chula Vista, Calif.) are seeded 24th and 26th, respectively, among the 64 competitors.

Nichols finished with a score of 637 in Saturday's Ranking Round and will take on 41st seed Ika Yuliana Rochmawati of Indonsesia at 5:01 p.m. on Tuesday.

Lorig's score of 635 means a matchup with 39th seed Virginie Arnold of France at 11:31 a.m.

Nichols, who was disappointed with her performance in the Ranking Round, is focused on an improved effort Tuesday.

"I go in each day just offering to do my best, just trying to give it my all, and that's going to be the same game plan," said Nichols. "I would have liked to perform better. But it's archery; it changes from day to day and you never know what kind of outcome you're going to get, so I feel good and confident going into the competition."

Following the ranking round, archers will be divided into 8 groups lettered from A to H. Each group of 8 archers will be divided into 2 subgroups of four by two pairs. As in the ranking round, they will shoot at 70m on a 122cm target face. Each archer will shoot four ends of three arrows (a total of 12 arrows). Archers between each arrow will shoot alternately, with each archer having a 30sec-time limit per arrow. The higher placed archer in the ranking round will decide who shoots first in the first end of each match, and then the archer with the lowest cumulative scores will shoot first in each following end. If the scores tie, the archer who shot first in the first end will begin shooting first. This rhythm and timing will apply to all of the individual matches. The winner of the match will progress to the next stage.

Athletes who advance in the individual competition will continue to the round of 16 later Tuesday. The quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal match, and gold medal match are set for Thursday, August 14.

Korea proved they are once again the country to beat after earning the top three seeds in the tournament. Athens gold medalist Sung-Hyun Park is seeded first after scoring 673 points in the Ranking Round.
