ANTALYA, Turkey - The third stage of the Archery World Cup Series opened yesterday with the highest participation numbers in history and explosive scores for an incredibly intense field. 549 archers are competing in Antalya, 400 of them in the recurve division, with the Rio Olympics just around the corner. The Final World Qualifying Tournament later this week will give the U.S. women their last chance to qualify a team for the Games.
To earn the additional two slots for a full team, the women will have to medal as a team. Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, California) qualified 14th with a 661, Hye Youn Park ranked 22nd with a 656 and Mackenzie Brown (Flint, Texas) posted a 650 to qualify 35th. For the Final World Qualifying Tournament, the trio ranked fourth and will likely have to knock out Ukraine in the quarterfinals to face Germany in the semifinals. Overall, the team qualified 8th while Korea led the field, smashing the world record by 7 points for a 2045. LaNola Pritchard (Lehi, Utah) qualified 109th with 612.
On the recurve men's field, a huge 646 out of 720 was the score to beat to make the cut to the top 104 for eliminations, just 40 points out of first place; Korea's Ku Bonchan scored 686. The U.S. archers were stacked closely with Daniel McLaughlin (West Chester, Ohio) leading the pack 676 for a 9th place seed. Brady Ellison also put up a 676 to qualify 10th just ahead of Zach Garrett's (Wellington, Missouri) 675, 12th. Jake Kaminski (Gainesville, Florida) shot a 654 to finish 69th.
McLaughlin, who is the alternate for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Archery Team spoke to World Archery about bringing in the highest score to provide competition for the team: "I have a responsibility to those guys to shoot my best to help them train." The team qualified 2nd, just behind Korea.
The compound men's division was also incredibly heated - USA's Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa) arrived in Antalya just hours before the start of competition this morning and after 36 arrows, led the field with 359 out of a possible 360. Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Massachusetts), Deaton, and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) qualified one point apart with 708, 707 and 706 for 6th, 7th, and 11th seeds respectively. As a team, they ranked 3rd. Steve Anderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) qualified 27th with a 703.
Crystal Gauvin (Dayville, Connecticut) lead the U.S. compound women with a 696 for a 9th place seed, just 8 points out of first. Dahlia Crook (Piedmont, Kansas) and Danielle Reynolds posted 689 and 687 respectively to qualify 24th and 27th, while Lexi Keller (Omro, Wisconsin) ranked 56th with a 671. Gauvin, Crook and Reynolds brought the team a qualification rank of 4th, while Gauvin and Gellenthien seeded 5th for the mixed team event.
