Recurve Women Qualification Rounds at World Target Championships

Sept 3rd, 2009

The women's recurve team competed in their full-day FITA Qualifying today September 3rd, 2009.  Experiencing overcast skies with light breezes the archers had a desirable day for shooting.  Lined up on the "B" position for targets 19 - 21, the US archers competed against archers from around the world.

The USA Women's Recurve team finished the day ranked 10th out of 25 countries.  The women's team of Jennifer Nichols, Khatuna Lorig, and Kristin Braun finished the qualification rounds with a 3909.  The 3909 point total saw the Americans 9 points out of 9th place Poland and 21 points ahead of Italy.  The US Women's team will compete against 7th ranked France on September 7th, in the first round of team round competition.

Leading the charge for the US women was Jennifer Nichols who finished in 7th Place qualifying as the top US finisher.  Nichols competed well in the long distances of 70m & 60m, shooting 322 and 334 respectively.  The short distances saw Nichols excel reaching the 7th place position. During the two short distances Nichol's placement fluctuated between 7th and 13th place.  For 50m Nichols shot a 329 and at 30m a 354, finishing in 7th Place.

Khatuna Lorig was the second place finisher for the US Recurve women.  Shooting a 319 at 70m Lorig was in a position to contend for top positions.  A rough stretch of 318 at 60m saw Lorig fall in the placings, only to rebound in the short distances to propel her to the top 25.  Lorig's short distances of 327 at 50m and 348 at 30m helped her to a strong finish and propel her to her 24th Place finish.

Rounding out the US Recurve women was Kristin Braun, competing in her first World Championships.  The strongest distance of the day for Braun was 60m in which she shot a 328.  The 328 at 60m ranked Kristin 27th for that distance.  The total points shot for Kristin at 70, 60, 50, & 30m are as follows:  303, 328, 298, and 329.  Braun finished the day ranked 69th out of the 97 archers competing.

The men's recurve qualifying will take place tomorrow, September 4th, in a full-day FITA.  Be sure to follow the results on FITA's website, www.archery.org and USA Archery Twitter site, www.twitter.com/USAArchery.
