2020 U.S. Olympic Archery Team Trials Procedures Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The United States Olympic Committee has approved USA Archery's selection procedures for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. To nominate a strong team, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Archery Team Trials process will begin next summer and will feature a four-part trials process.

The Trials will begin at the 135th U.S. National Target Championships in Dublin, Ohio, August 2019. A cut to the top sixteen archers will be made at the 2019 USAT event, the Texas Shootout in College Station, Texas next September. The first Trials event will be open to anyone who officially registers for the event, is a USA Archery member and a citizen of the United States.

Trials will continue in the spring of 2020 with a standalone event (location TBA) and at the 2020 Gator Cup USAT event. Dates for the final two events will be announced at least 45 days prior to the start of each event. Also, nominees to the team must meet the Minimum Qualification Standards set by World Archery. More information on trials dates is available here.

In addition to selecting the U.S. Olympic Archery Team, the U.S must also earn quota slots from the available positions for 64 men and 64 women in the Tokyo 2020 Games. Each country can qualify either 1 or 3 places each for the Olympic Games in the men's and women's recurve categories.

The main qualification tournament will be the 2019 World Archery Championships. Each country's team that places in the top 8 in the men's and women's recurve team rounds will qualify a full team of 3 men and 3 women for the Olympics. If either team should fail to qualify 3 spots, there are individual spots available (1 per gender) and later, additional qualifying opportunities for teams prior to the Olympic Games.

New in 2020, the Olympic Program will add mixed team competition to the archery podium opportunities along with individual and team competition. Should the U.S. qualify more than one man and one woman for the 2020 Games, the mixed team roster will not be named until after qualification in Tokyo.

The 2020 U.S. Paralympic Archery Team Trials selection procedures were also recently announced. In big news, the USOC has increased their investment in Paralympians with equal payouts for Olympic and Paralympic medal winners as part of Operation Gold.
