SHANGHAI - A strong U.S. squad is off to a solid start at the first stage of the Archery
World Cup, despite reports of significant jet lag and humid conditions at
Yuanshen Stadium.
On the
compound side, both U.S. teams qualified number one after a 72 arrow, 50 meter round
- but Korea made it clear that there's a new emphasis on their compound
archers, with world-renowned Olympian Kim Soo-Nyung coaching the Korean squad,
who nearly outpaced Team USA in the qualifications.
Erika Jones
(Grand Island, Neb.) was the high qualifier for the compound archers, finishing
yesterday's round second with 692. Teammates Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio), Carli Cochran (Willow Street, Pa.) and Diane Watson (Hudson, Fla.) finished
5th, 6th and 27th, respectively.
Braden
Gellenthien (College Station, Texas) shot a strong 709 to qualify third, nearly
cleaning the first half with a 358. Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) was just four
points behind with a 705 for fifth place, while Rodger Willett, Jr.
(Gloucester, Va.) and Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) locked down the 12th and
18th spots with 698 and 696.
For the
recurvers, five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, Calif.) brought
her A-game to Shanghai, hitting a 1344 to qualify 7th in the four-distance, 144
arrow round shot by the recurve archers. Mackenzie Brown (Chula Vista,
Calif.) shot a 1298 to qualify 37th, while Olympian Miranda Leek (College
Station, Texas) and Heather Koehl (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) scored 1272 and 1263,
finishing 49th and 52nd.
Olympic silver
medalist Brady Ellison (Chula Vista, Calif.) clinched the 11th seed with his
score of 1329, while Joe Fanchin (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a 1304 to end in
26th. Fellow Olympic medalists Jake Kaminski (Gainesville, Fla.) and Butch
Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) finished with 32nd and 43rd
place rankings, shooting 1297 and 1285 respectively.
Both recurve
divisions were largely dominated by members of the Korean team in the
qualifications, with Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek taking the top men's ranking
with a strong 1371, and Hye Jin Chang shooting a 1368 for the top women's spot.
On the compound side, it was Denmark's Martin Damsbo who was the top qualifier
with 710, while Albina Loginova ranked first with 692.
