New names and a new destination as the U.S. archers get ready for 2025 World Cup Stage 4

MADRID, Spain – Four debutants are among a 16-strong U.S. team in the Spanish capital this week for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 4, which runs from Tuesday until Sunday.

Making their first appearance at a World Cup stage will be Alex Gilliam (recurve men), Olivia Martin (recurve women), Louis Price (compound men) and Sydney Sullenberger (compound women). Meanwhile, Paige Pearce will feature at a World Cup event for the first time since September 2021 and the World Cup Final in Yankton, S.D.

Martin has enjoyed recent success, claiming bronze at the Easton Foundations SoCal Showdown, after finishing with the second best score through qualifying. The 21-year-old from Colorado defeated Casey Kaufhold in the bronze medal match courtesy of a shoot-off. Price took fourth at SoCal.

This is the first time that Spain has hosted a World Cup stage, and is the fourth and final opportunity for archers to qualify for the Archery World Cup Final in China in October. James Lutz is the defending Archery World Cup champion in compound men, having won in sensational style in Mexico last year.

The USA has 12 medals from the previous three World Cup stages of 2025, including recurve women team gold and compound mixed team gold in Turkey last time out.

Brady Ellison arrived in Spain as the recurve men’s world number one, and he is one of 336 archers from 49 nations ready to compete.

Trenton Cowles, Alex Gilliam, Catalina GNoriega (all Texas A&M) and Sydney Sullenberger (Columbia University) will be clocking up the air miles this month. They are also part of the team heading to Germany for the World University Games.

Competition begins in Spain on Tuesday with compound qualifying. Ellison and Co. step into the Vallehermoso Stadium on Wednesday when recurve gets underway. Compound team eliminations take place on Wednesday morning local time, through the bronze medal matches.

You can keep across all the latest scores and results. Finals will be broadcast live from the Explanada Puente Del Rey on Saturday and Sunday. You can watch coverage from Madrid with a subscription to archery+.

NOTE: Puente del Rey, or the King’s Bridge, was commissioned by King Ferdinand VII and completed in 1829. Its original use allowed the Spanish royal family to move between the Royal Palace and the Casa de Campo, now the largest public park in Madrid.
