LANSING, Mich. – Olympians, world champions, World Cup medalists and international archers will be among the almost 500 student-athletes competing at the 2025 HotelPlanner USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals, which take place this week in the Great Lakes State.
Texas A&M University (TAMU) head to Lansing to defend their Overall National Team Championship title, knowing they can expect strong competition from the usual suspects, including 2022 and 2023 winners from the University of the Cumberlands.
Six athletes will arrive from Shanghai, China having represented the United States at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2 last week. These athletes are Trenton Cowles, Catalina GNoriega, Carson Krahe – who won silver in compound women – Sawyer Sullivan (all Texas A&M), Landyn Cox and Isaac Sullivan (both University of the Cumberlands).
Official practice takes place on Thursday, followed by the opening ceremony. Competition begins with the 72-arrow qualification round on Friday. That portion of the event will double as 2025 World University Games U.S. Team Trials in recurve and compound. The World University Games take place in Germany from July 16-27.
While TAMU toppled the University of the Cumberlands last year in the Overall National Team Championship, there were a number of impressive individual performances when the event was held at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
Kimber Wheeler triumphed in the fixed pins college women for back-to-back success. She will be setting her sights on a three-peat in Lansing for the University of the Cumberlands. Sawyer Sullivan (TAMU) is also seeking three in a row in college compound men.
Micheal Plummer won gold in the college recurve men division the previous two editions, but he has since graduated from Mount Marty University, opening the door for a new champion in 2025.
Venugopal Kunnavakkam was very much the team player in 2024, switching to compete in college barebow men at short notice. He not only won gold but he also set a new collegiate national record. This year he reverts back to his favored recurve for TAMU.
There will also be archers in Lansing this week who qualified for the USA team for the World Archery Youth Championships in Canada in August. Joshua Baek will be shooting for Columbia University, Jack Krengel competes for Texas A&M.
