ANTALYA, Turkey – The next generation of U.S. archery talent will be on display in the Turkish resort of Antalya this week at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage #3.
Three of the four compound women will be appearing at a World Cup stage for the first time, among them 17-year-old Savannah O’Donohue, a triple gold medalist last year at the World Archery Youth Championships. Only Sydney Sullenberger has previous World Cup experience, with Lanie Nish and Rachel Flack – who turns 24 on Tuesday – completing the quartet.
Compound men also have a first timer in Wade McLanahan. The 26-year-old silver medalist at last year’s Easton Foundations SoCal Showdown will compete alongside Curtis Broadnax, Gaius Carter and Isaac Sullivan.
Carter (pictured) made his way to Antalya from Yankton, S.D., where he competed in the USA Archery Field Nationals and U.S. Team Trials. He took silver in Field Nationals and will be part of the U.S. team at the World Archery Field Championships back in Yankton in September.
Another who has switched field archery for target archery – South Dakota for the southern Mediterranean – is Casey Kaufhold. She took gold in recurve women in Yankton, appearing at her first-ever Field Nationals and will also represent the United States at the World Field Championships.
Kaufhold said of transitioning from one form of the sport to the other, “I’ll shoot the bow that I’ve been shooting throughout the season; same set-up as always. The set-up for Field Nationals was a little bit heavier and with a lighter arrow and so that will be my back-up bow and then I’ll be shooting my main bow.
“But at the end of the day it’s the same thing, executing a process and executing a shot, so the process might be different but the shot’s still the same, and so I’m sure muscle memory will hit real quick.”
She added with a smile, “I’m sure after a tough Field Nationals that it’ll feel a lot easier to shoot a flat 70 meters than all the hills that we had in Yankton.”
Recurve also has a few ‘debutants’ in Nicholas D’Amour and Akshara Vijay, though in D’Amour’s case, this will be his 16th World Cup stage but his first for the USA. He previously wore the colors of the US Virgin Islands.

This is the third of four stages, with the fourth and final stage taking place in Madrid, Spain from July 7-12. The World Cup Final will be in Saltillo, Mexico from September 12-13. Brady Ellison has already qualified for his 15th World Cup Final appearance having taken gold in Stage #1 in Mexico.
