Collegiate Teams Win Honors at National Outdoor Collegiate Championships

DUBLIN, Ohio – U.S. National Outdoor Collegiate Championships official team rounds this afternoon brought heat and excitement to a screaming field of school spirit and spectacular shooting.

Following the collegiate merger, new players made a name for themselves as heavy hitters on the USA Archery event circuit. University of the Cumberlands and Union College both were standouts in the mixed team events, and today, Cumberlands took compound men’s gold, compound women’s silver, bowhunter women’s silver and bowhunter men’s bronze.

Union College finished with the compound and bowhunter women’s national champion titles and compound and bowhunter men’s silver. On behalf of her school’s outstanding performance, compound shooter Jodi Hicks shared: “it was a lot of fun, it was really nerve wracking. At one point, we fell behind a bit and made a really big comeback, which was the first time we did that. This is the biggest event we’ve ever shot so this win is really special. It was exciting to make it all the way through so many matches and finish with the win.”

Michigan State University won the compound women’s silver and men’s bronze, and Texas A&M clinched the bowhunter men’s national champion title, while Kentucky Christian University won the bowhunter women’s silver.

The recurve matches saw great excitement – the women’s gold final came down to a classic rivalry. For the fourth year in a row, Texas A&M and Columbia University went head to head for the title and A&M was victorious after a hard fought 5-3 battle. Emmanuel College clinched the bronze.

Taking the men’s gold final to a shoot off, University of Texas, Austin sealed the victory over University of California, Irvine. Texas A&M University smoked the bronze final in another classic matchup with James Madison University. Moments after being announced the winner, UT’s Travis Burt shared: “I’m incredibly excited just to be here and be competing with my teammates. I’m at a loss for words, this is amazing. The competition was stiff and very fun. Texas A&M put up a great fight, it’s been a while since we’ve shot against them and that match was really fun.”

Lamar University sealed the barebow men’s gold over Georgia Institute of Technology, while Californai State University, Long Beach climbed from an 8thplace seed to win bronze.  University of California, Davis won the women’s title over Kentucky Christian University, and University of California, Berkeley finished with silver.

Competition resumes tomorrow with the individual elimination matches. Complete results are available on USA Archery's Live Results page. Official photos can be found on USA Archery's photo site, and be sure to follow USA Archery on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for more from the event.
