Sustaining Excellence - 2010 & Beyond

USA Archery returned to the medal stand on more than one occasion in 2009, and we are now better positioned to continue this momentum for 2010 and beyond. We are excited about the upcoming season for all of our international squads, which will include fielding full teams at the majority of the World Cup events.

The USA Archery business model is to establish and maintain high performance standards and objectives at all competitions for all athletes. To better establish and help us in continuing to reach these high objectives it takes regular medal performances to attract support for USA Archery.

The Easton Foundations, the United States Olympic Committee and USA Archery's current sponsors including Easton, Hoyt, Taxmasters, United Airlines and Nike are committed to supporting USA Archery in achieving this long-range plan. Their significant contributions will be utilized in developing all archers' skills nationally and internationally.

USA Archery is now positioned to send teams abroad, expand support for grassroots initiatives, and further develop athletes' and coaches' skill sets. 

How will this work for you in 2010? 

USAA Performance Target 1:  World Cup Events - 4 Events - "A Priority"

During the 2010 Season, USA Archery is focusing its attention on laying the groundwork for future international success at the World Cups, World Championships and Olympics.  For USA Archery to be competitive with the rest of the world on both an individual and team level we need to embark on building and sustaining a winning atmosphere! 

Success at the World Cup Series is an important component for winning Olympic Medals.  USA Archery's vision is to use the World Cup platform to train our archers in the team and Olympic rounds in preparation for World Championships and Olympics.  It is imperative for athletes and coaches to experience the highest level of competition in preparation for critical international events. 

An emphasis on the team rounds needs to be a priority for U.S. archers competing at USAT National events, which provides archers traveling internationally an opportunity to train together in competitive scenarios. 

Another vital component to increasing competition success is the hosting of team camps prior to World Cup events.  The World Cup Preparation Camps will be conducted in the same location as the World Cups, departing three days prior to the first day of official practice. These camps will be used to discuss and practice team strategies along with acquainting archers and coaches.

Selection for the 2010 World Cup teams will utilize the Rolling Ranking System.  The four available positions will be offered based on the top 10 archers in the Rolling Rankings as detailed below.  The four positions for men's and women's recurve will be fully-funded by the United States Olympic Committee.  The four positions for men's and women's compound will have room and board supported by the Easton Foundations for the first two World Cups. 

2010 International Events - Qualification Process & Team Funding

World Cups & Preparation Camps

In 2010 USA Archery will send athletes to the World Cup event site three days prior to the first day of official practice for a training camp. The preparation days will allow athletes to acclimate and prepare for individual, team round and mixed team competitions.

Qualification Procedures:  Top four athletes through the Top 10 Rolling Ranking, until four positions are filled.  (4 Cmpd Men, 4 Cmpd Women, 4 Rcve Men, 4 Rcve Women). 

• World Cups 1 & 2 archers chosen based on the Rolling Ranking as of Dec. 31, 2009.
• World Cups 3 & 4 archers chosen based on the Rolling Ranking as of April 30, 2010, including the 2010 Arizona Cup and 2010 Texas Shootout.

Recurve archer funding:  The United States Olympic Committee has provided funding for USA Archery to send a full squad of four archers to the four World Cup Events. 

Compound archer funding: The Easton Foundations have provided USA Archery the funding to send full compound teams to the first two World Cups, minus airfare.  Athletes will purchase airfare and USA Archery will cover on-site expenses for the World Cup 1 in Porec, Croatia and World Cup 2 in Antalya, Turkey.  The World Cup 3 in Ogden, Utah and World Cup 4 in Shanhai, China will be self-funded by the individual athlete.

World Cup Stage 1 - Porec, Croatia - May 4-8

• Qualification Procedures:   Rolling Ranking as of Dec. 31, 2009 
• Travel days:  Depart May 1 / Return May 9 (subject to change)
• Staff:  3 Staff (TBD)
• Note:  Athletes participating in the Redding Shoot will need to travel immediately to Croatia after the competition

World Cup Stage 2 - Antalya, Turkey - June 8-12

• Qualification Procedures:  Rolling Ranking as of Dec. 31, 2009 
• Travel days: Depart June 5 / Return June 13 (subject to change)
• Staff:  3 Staff (TBD)
• Note: Athletes participating at World Field Trials will need to travel immediately from Spokane, Wash., to Turkey after the Trials

World Cup Stage 3 - Ogden, Utah - Aug. 3-7

• Qualification Procedures:  Rolling Ranking updated with finishes from 2010 Arizona Cup and the 2010 Texas Shootout
• Travel days:  Depart July 31 / Return Aug. 8 (subject to change)
• Staff:  3 Staff (TBD)
• Note: Athletes participating at NFAA Field Nationals in Darrington, Wash. will need to travel immediately to Ogden, UT

World Cup Stage 4 - Shanghai, China - August 31-Sept. 4

• Qualification Procedures:  Rolling Ranking updated with finishes from 2010 Arizona Cup and the 2010 Texas Shootout.
• Travel Days:  Depart Aug. 28 / Return Sept. 5 (subject to change)
• Staff:  3 Staff (TBD)

World Cup Final - Edinburgh, Great Britain - Sept. 18-19

• Qualification Procedures:  FITA selects archers based on top finishes at the four World Cup stages
• Travel Days:  TBD
• Funding:  Provided by FITA. 

Youth Olympic Games Continental Qualifying - Salinas, Puerto Rico, April 15-18

• Qualifying Procedures:  Refer to blog on Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games
• Tentative Travel Dates:  April 13-19
• Funding:  Fully-funded
• Staff:  1 Coach and 1 Team Leader

 
Ecuador COPARCO Event for Jr. USAT - Pediente, Ecuador, May 20 - 25 (Recently Updated) - CANCELLED FROM OF LACK ENTRANTS

• Qualification Procedures:  The top four archers from the 2010 Jr. USAT Rankings will be chosen to attend this event (boys rcve, boys cmpd, girls rcve, girls cmpd).  To field a full four-person team, priority will be first given to junior archers in ranking order on Jr. USAT, the top Cadet on Jr. USAT and then continue down the junior ranking. 
• Travel Dates:  TBD
• Funding:  Funding provided by Easton Foundations.  First two slots are fully funded in each division.  Third and fourth slots will receive $650 toward their travel costs.  Additional expenses are the athlete's responsibility.
• Staff:  3 (TBD)

World Field Championships - Budapest, Hungary - July 13-18

• Qualification Procedures:  Procedures are being finalized.
• Trials Event:  World Field Trials in Spokane, Wash., June 4-6.
• Travel Dates:  TBD
• Funding:  Self-funded trip organized and managed through USA Archery High Performance Manager. 
• Staff:  4 (TBD) - funded by the Easton Sports Development Foundation. 

Youth Olympic Games - Singapore - Aug. 14-26

• Qualifying Procedures:  Procedures are being finalized. The United States must qualify these slots through participation at the qualifying event in Odgen, Utah and Salinas, Puerto Rico.  A selection process will select 1 boy and 1 girl between the ages 17 and 18, who are born between Jan. 1, 1992-Dec. 31, 1993.
• Trials Event:  JOAD Nationals - Des Moines, IA, June 24-28
• Travel Dates:  TBD
• Funding: Fully-Funded by USOC
• Staff:  1 (TBD)

COPARCO Event, Pan-Am Games Qualifying for Sr. USAT - Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 15-21

• Qualification Procedures:  This is the first qualifying event for the 2011 Pan American Games.  Top four male and female recurve archers on the Rolling Rankings updated July 30, including the 2010 U.S. Nationals Championships.
• Travel Dates:  TBD
• Funding:  Fully funded event sponsored by the Easton Foundations
• Staff:  2-3 (TBD)

2011 USAT and Jr. USAT Requirements - the requirements are posted on the website so you can plan your travel year accordingly.  Changes to the program are detailed in two previous blogs on November 24 and January 18.

Rolling Ranking System - changes by FITA have caused a need to revamp the manner in which the Rolling Ranking System is calculated.  This topic is of utmost importance and combining the two forms of tournament systems to continue the use of the Rolling Ranking System.  For 2010 the number of events required for the Rolling Ranking will be three for both recurve and compound.

USOC Recurve Operation Gold - Traditionally the USOC approves an annual Operation Gold event in which they provide monetary support for athletes placing in the top 8 in the highest international competitions during the year.  The 2010 Operation Gold Event is the World Cup Final in Edinburgh, Great Britain, as there is not a World Championship or Olympic Games for archery in 2010. Team stipends are also awarded to each member based upon their final placement.  Depending on the athletes' placement, the stipends are: 

• 1^st - $5,000
• 2^nd - $4,000
• 3^rd - $3,500
• 4^th - $3,000
• 5th - $2,500
• 6th - $2,500
• 7th - $2,000 (Individual Events Only)
• 8th - $2,000 (Individual Events Onlys)

USOC Recurve Support - The USOC will provide financial funding and health insurance for the top males and females within USA Archery.  Archer eligibility and specific funding levels for Direct Athlete Support and Elite-Athlete Health Insurance can be found in the 2010 High Performance Plan .
