USA Rocks World Archery Field Championships Qualifications

ZAGREB, Croatia - "I'm coming for gold."

Brady Ellison, Olympic silver medalist, let his scores do the talking at the World Archery Field Championships today, topping qualifications with a 751 after one day of shooting unmarked distances and one day of marked distance targets.

"It feels good to qualify first," he said. "I think I could have shot better today, though."

Also storming the field today: the compound men's trio of Jesse Broadwater, Dave Cousins and Steve Anderson, who swept the top three in their division to put Team USA on the map.

Broadwater, who was on fire during the first day of shooting, qualified with a solid 850, followed by Cousins in second with 830, and Anderson rounding out the top three with 826.

Ellison's teammates - fellow Olympic medalists Jake Kaminski and Vic Wunderle - weren't far behind, qualifying 7th and 10th, respectively.

There were several other top qualifications by American archers, including Jamie Van Natta, who ended up 6th in a very tough group of compound women, and Heather Koehl, the Olympic Team Alternate who qualified 8th today.

Barebow men's trio Ben Rogers, John Demmer III and Alan Eagleton took 11th through 13th positions in a highly competitive field.

Youth archers also posted very solid performances, with Collin Klimitchek leading the recurve junior men; in the compound junior women's group, world champion Emily Fischer posted a 2nd place qualification.

Sister and brother duo Karissa and Nathan Yamaguchi qualified 2nd and 3rd in the recurve junior women's and men's categories, respectively.

There are other archers making this trip a family affair: Miriam Trafford, qualifying 5th for recurve junior women, is joined by her mother Charlene, who's competing on the women's barebow team.

For the Frerich family, it's Megan and Tristan who are competing, in the barebow junior women's and compound junior men's categories, respectively.

Tomorrow, individual eliminations begin; team eliminations will take place on Saturday, with finals on Sunday. Watch for Team USA to come out swinging in all divisions as the squad puts forth their best effort for shots at gold medals.
