Men's Recurve FITA Qualifying at World Target Championships

The final day of FITA Qualification Rounds took place in Ulsan, Korea as the men's recurve concluded the final day of qualifying.  The third day of qualifying presented conditions varied from the previous two days.  The overcast skies, light variable breezes, and occasional light rain presented challenges for the archers.  Overcoming the changing conditions the athlete's successfully completed the qualification rounds in preparation for the elimination rounds on Sunday, September 6th

The men's recurve team of Olympians Brady Ellison, Vic Wunderle, and Butch Johnson finished in 10th place.  The total overall score for the athletes totaled 3950 points, only 8 points out of 8th place.  The teams of Russia and Great Britain shot a 3958 with the tie breaker of 10's going to Russia for 8th place and Great Britain for 9th.

Individually the men's team finished 8th, 43rd, and 48 with all of the archers shooting 1300 or above.  Leading the charge for the men's team was Brady Ellison finishing in 8th place with a 1343.  Ellison's score was two points removed from 7th place and four points out of 6th place.  During the 70m distance Ellison shot a 341 for a 6th place finish within the distance.

The second men's qualifier for Team USA was Vic Wunderle who finished 43rd with a 1307.  Wunderle opened the competition with a 307, followed by a 327 at 70m to conclude the long distances.  The 50 m distance proved to be Wunderle's top distance shooting a 334 for a placing of 23.  Completed the short distance Wunderle shot a 339 to finish with a score of 1371. 

The third American archer finishing this afternoon was Butch Johnson.   Johnson concluded the competition with a 1300 good for 48th place out of the 115 archers.  The long distances in the morning saw Johnson shooting a 311 for 90m and a 328 for 70m.  The short distances of the afternoon observed Johnson shooting a 320 for 50m and a 341 for 30m. 

Tomorrow September 5th, 2009 the men's and women's compound archers will compete in elimination matches.  The women will shoot in the morning and the men in the afternoon.
