USA Archery Secures Compound Spots for 2022 World Games

MEDELLIN, Colombia – Medellin hosted the last chance qualifier for the 2022 World Games, set to take place in Birmingham, Alabama. For the compound target competition, USA Archery, as the host nation, was awarded quota spots for one man, one woman and one para archer, plus the chance to earn up to one additional man’s and one woman’s spot.

As Savannah Vanderwier and James Lutz secured spots in the women’s and men’s gold medal matches at the last chance qualifier today (medal matches to be contested tomorrow), USA locked up the maximum spots for Birmingham.

Top qualifier Kris Schaff went out in the quarterfinals 144-145 to Costa Rica’s Gonzales Vargas while 5th seed Lutz upset Puerto Rico’s Alvarado 148-141. Then with a 149 in the semis against Gonzalez Vargas, Lutz earned a spot in the gold final – needing only a top three finish to guarantee the quota spot.

USA’s 3rd seed Makenna Proctor went head to head with teammate Claire Garrison in the quarterfinals, advancing with a 145-141, while 2nd seed Savannah Vanderwier outscored Colombia’s Rodrigo 146-142. Vanderwier and Proctor then faced off in the semifinals and a 143-141 decision put Vanderwier in the gold match and Proctor in the bronze final.

“Well mission accomplished – we came here with earning our spots as our goal,” commented Vanderwier. “I just tried to take it one arrow at a time with the recurve switch going on and I knew if I made it past that first match that Makenna and I were set. We just wanted the other person to shoot well but either way Team USA wins so we just had fun with that last one.”

Competition wraps tomorrow with medal matches for the World Games Qualifier and the World Ranking event. Lutz will also shoot for bronze for the world ranking event as will Michelle Ahn in the recurve women’s division. Complete results from the competition are available on Ianseo.
