Double gold for Kaufhold as the USA top the medals table at the Pan American Championships

MEDELLIN, Colombia – The final day of competition at the 2024 Pan American Championships produced more medals for the USA, with all coming in the recurve division.

Casey Kaufhold claimed two golds, one in the recurve women team and the other in the individual event. Both went to a shoot-off.

Jackson Mirich took silver in the recurve men, with Jack Williams winning bronze. Williams was part of the recurve men’s team which also took bronze.

The fine more medals on Sunday took the USA’s total tally to 12, consisting of seven gold, two silver and three bronze. Of the golds, three came in the individual competition, with four in the team events.

Kaufhold held off a valiant fightback from top seed Alejandra Valencia (MEX), having led 5-1 after three ends. Valencia took it to a shoot-off, where Kaufhold landed a nine and Valencia an eight.

Mexico was also the opposition in the gold medal match in the recurve women’s team event and this one also went to a shoot-off. The USA team, of Kaufhold, Catalina Noriega and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez never trailed in the match, and took gold after posting 28 to Mexico’s 24 in the shoot-off.

Williams warmed up for his individual medal match with a 6-2 recurve men’s team triumph over Mexico, sharing the spotlight with Gabe Anderson and Brady Ellison.

The recurve men’s gold medal match involved Mirich, who was hit by a late surge from fourth seed Matias Grande (MEX) to lose 6-4.

Team USA returns home with an impressive medal haul, among them three golds for compound archer Alexis Ruiz, who also secured a slot for the United States at next year’s World Games in China.

And not only did the recurve women return as Pan Am Championships winners but they also managed to fill their quota slots for the Olympic Games in Paris later this year.

On the barebow front, the USA took gold and silver in the women’s division. Gold medalist Cindy Czako also won the barebow mixed team alongside Marcus Cooley.
