Collegiate Nationals Kicks Off Qualification with Record Participation

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The 2022 Collegiate Target Nationals started today at the Easton Archery Center of Excellence in Chula Vista, Calif. USA Archery is thrilled to welcome more than 500 athletes - record-shattering numbers for this annual, fun-filled event.

The competition kicked off with qualification day. Archers are competing for individual, team and mixed team medals, as well as All-American Honors and the coveted Overall National Team Championship award.

The wind proved tricky in today’s rounds, but the competition fields were filled with archers happy to be shooting at this event and fighting hard to bring home top honors for their schools.

Texas A&M’s Riley Marx locked up the top seed for the recurve women. “This is definitely my favorite tournament of the year,” remarked Marx. “I love the environment and seeing all the colleges come together. We’re all going through school and it’s extremely difficult for people in college to balance their time with archery, so I think the competition gets tougher every year and I really enjoy shooting this event.”

For University of Pikeville recent graduate Kirklin Newsome, it was exciting to take the fixed pins men’s pole amidst a field of tough competition: “It’s always great to be back at any tournament hosted by USA Archery,” he shared.  “Today’s wind was a little bit rough which made it tough to stay at the top of the competition as good as everyone else here is, I’m just blessed to be here.”

The competition continues tomorrow with the team rounds in the morning followed by the individual elimination matches through the bronze finals in the afternoon. Sunday will showcase the gold medal matches, followed by the mixed team event. Mixed team gold finals will stream live at 3:00 PM PT on USA Archery’s Facebook and YouTube. Scores will update live throughout the weekend on Between Ends and photos are available on the USA Archery photo site.
