USA Archers on Track for Podiums at World Cup Berlin After Qualification

BERLIN, Germany - The fourth stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup Series opened today with qualification and mixed team eliminations through the semifinals. As the last chance to qualify for the World Cup Final, and the last major international event of this scale before the World Archery Championships this fall, archers are coming into peak competition shape.

The U.S. compound men's squad of Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Massachusetts), Steve Anderson (West Jordan, Utah) and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) ranked 1st as a team and individually qualified 3rd through 5th respectively with 709, 708 and 708 each, just below top scorer Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands who earned a 711. Kris Schaff (Billings, Montana) who is new to the team this year and just picked up a bronze at the World Games in Poland, ranked 15th with a 702.

For the compound women, Paige Gore (Red Bluff, California) and Cassidy Cox (Albuquerque, New Mexico) led the U.S. team to the top of the charts, ranked 2nd behind Mexico after individual 3rd and 4th place scores of 695 and 694 while teammates Lexi Keller (Omro, Wisconsin) and Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) were 28th and 37th respectively.

Golden team Gore and Gellenthien took the top qualifying seed and breezed through the 1/8ths but were forced to a shoot off in the quarterfinals with Russia, which they won. Shooting with France in the semis, Gore and Gellenthien came back from an initial small defecit to a tie in the third end. In the final four arrows they dropped only one out of the 10 ring to take the win 156-155 to shoot for gold this weekend.

Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona) took top qualification honors for the U.S. recurve men, finishing 7th with a 673 while  Matthew Requa (Houston, Texas), Jake Kaminski (Gainesville, Florida) and Thomas Stanwood (Raynham, Massachusetts) were 22nd, 27th and 82nd for a team qualification score to rank 2nd.

Mackenzie Brown (Flint, Texas), who will need a strong finish this weekend to seal a spot in the World Cup Final lineup qualified 11th with a 656 while teammates LaNola Shepherd (Lehi, Utah) Ariel Gibilaro (North Branford, Connecticut) and Eliana Claps (Everett, Washington) each ranked 35th, 47th and 55th with Brown, Shephed and Gibilaro qualifying 9th as a team.

Brown and Ellison joined forces for the mixed team event with a 4th place seed and met tough opponents in Italy round one - going all the way to a shoot off to take the win and advance. In the quarterfinals they took a 5-3 win over France to meet Korea in the semifinals. The two teams split the first set and then went back and forth over the next two to reach a 3-3 draw. In the final set, Korea's 38 beat USA's 36 and they took the win sending Brown and Ellison to the bronze final this weekend.

Competition resumes tomorrow with early elimination matches. Results are available at www.worldarchery.org. The finals this weekend will be livestreamed on the Olympic Channel. For more, follow USA Archery on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram
