Thirty Two Advance to World Championships Team Trials

The Easton Foundations Gator Cup, the second USAT Qualifier Series Event of 2011, also serves at the first leg of the World Archery Championships Team Trials. Yesterday's qualifying round determined which archers would advance, and it was a point-for-point battle for berths to the Trials event as well as bonus points awarded for score.

Brady Ellison, shooting a strong 1357, qualified number one in the recurve men's category, followed by Jacob Wukie, scoring 1337, and Jake Kaminski with a 1328. Other recurve men advancing to the Trials are Joe Fanchin, Vic Wunderle, Thomas Stanwood, Butch Johnson and Nick Kale.

For the recurve women, Khatuna Lorig started out strong and never relinquished her hold of the number one spot, ending the day with a 1342. Jennifer Nichols finished in 2nd with a 1317, while Miranda Leek, shooting a 1303, took the third spot. Karen Scavotto, Heather Koehl, Lori Cieslinski, Holly Stover and Sarah Chai rounded out the top 8 advancing to the World Archery Championships Team Trials.

It was a tough battle for the top spots on the compound side as well, with the compound men and women both close enough in score to keep spectators on the edges of their seats. For the men, Reo Wilde climbed from an initial deficit to finish a strong first with 1414; Jesse Broadwater clinched the second spot at 1412, and Dave Cousins rounded out the top three with his score of 1410. The remaining compound men who will join Wilde and Broadwater in the Trials are Chance Beaubouef, Shane Wills, Braden Gellenthien, James Butts, Cody Thompson and Ben Cleland.

The women were equally fierce in their competition for the spots, with Jamie Van Natta qualifying number one, scoring 1393; Christie Colin held second with a 1373, and Erika Anschutz took third, shooting a 1364. Additionally, Kayleigh Johnston, Sarah Lance, Carli Cochrane, Diane Johnston and Paige Pearce will join them in round robin match play beginning later today.

Other highlights included a win in the women's cadet recurve division by Lauren Clamon with a 1270; cadet compound archer Bridger Deaton winning 1st in his category with a 1378; Michael Lukow qualifying first for para recurve men with a 1038, and Kevin Evans taking the top spot for para compound men, shooting a 1344.
