DUBLIN, Ireland - The World Archey Field Championships continued today with eliminations through the semifinals. The top 16 archers in each category shot the first round with the top 8 advancing to the second, and the top 4 reaching the semifinals.
Steve Anderson and Dave Cousins both made it to the semifinals for the compound men's division while Jesse Broadwater, who was the event champion in 2012 and 2014, was eliminated in the second round where he ranked 6th. Jamie Van Natta, the last remaining U.S. compound woman also finished 6th in the second round of eliminations.
In the semifinal individual matches, where archers shoot head to head matches, Anderson won 67-65 while Cousins fell 70-67 to Denmark's Stephan Hansen, who will face Anderson for the gold Sunday.
Compound juniors Sophia Strachan, Savanna Vanderwier and Steven Collins also both earned spots in the gold finals this weekend topping early eliminations with strong scores.
Brady Ellison and Miriam Trafford, who were event Champions in 2014 are the sole to U.S. archers in the recurve finals. 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Ellison won a tough semifinal match Olympic silver medalist Jean-Charles Valladont of France 62-61 after being close throughout the entire match. Ellison will shoot for the senior men's champion title again while Trafford will shoot for bronze against Slovenia's Cavic.
Victor Wunderle finished 5th, just one point away from making the cut to the semifinals. Heather Koehl and Karissa Yamaguchi finished 7th in the senior and junior recurve women's brackets.
In the barebow division, top qualifier in the hottest contested bracket John Demmer III had an early exit in the first elimination round where he ranked 10th. Juniors Mark Schlaudraff and Abigail Weir made it to the semifinals where Shlaudraff took a solid 45-40 win to shoot for gold while Weir fell short 43-39 but will have a chance for bronze.

The team finals take place tomorrow and individual finals will be shot on Sunday. The team competition is unique in field archery; each team consists of one recurve, one compound and one barebow archer from each country. The U.S. archers are ranked first for the men's team, second for the junior men's team, third for the junior women's team and fifth for the senior women's team. Tune in tomorrow to cheer USA!
