USA Archery’s commitment to protecting every athlete through safety standards, education and accountability

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Archery is dedicated to creating an environment where athletes can train, compete, and grow with confidence. That commitment shows up not just in words, but in actions - through clear policies, consistent procedures, and accessible resources designed to protect participants at every level.

Each year, USA Archery undergoes a comprehensive audit by the U.S. Center for SafeSport (the Center), the organization responsible for safeguarding athletes across Olympic and Paralympic sports in the United States. These audits ensure that safety standards aren’t just in place - they’re working.

USA Archery has consistently demonstrated full compliance, reinforcing its role as a leader in athlete protection.

The Center evaluates organizations across four key areas:

1. Education and Training

Knowledge is the first line of defense. USA Archery requires SafeSport training and background screens for all Adult Participants who regularly interact with or have authority over minor athletes.

This includes strict adherence to the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) - guidelines designed to establish clear boundaries, prevent misconduct, and create a culture of accountability.

2. Communication and Reporting

A safe environment depends on awareness. USA Archery ensures that all participants understand their rights, responsibilities, and the steps to take if they suspect any alleged misconduct.

Clear communication channels empower athletes and families to speak up, ask questions, and report concerns.

3. Quality Control System

Behind the scenes, USA Archery maintains a comprehensive quality control system to ensure compliance at every USA Archery sanctioned event. This includes verifying that all pre-registered athletes, coaches, judges and other event personnel have the required training, that individuals listed on the Organizational Exclusion List (OEL) are not permitted to participate, and that interactions with minor athletes be observable and interruptible.  This list includes those suspended by USA Archery and also other NGB sports organizations.

It’s a proactive approach - focused on prevention, oversight, and accountability.

4. Response & Resolution

When concerns arise, they are taken seriously and addressed promptly. USA Archery has established clear policies and procedures to respond to and resolve allegations of misconduct under the SafeSport Code.

  • The U.S. Center for SafeSport has exclusive jurisdiction to investigate and resolve any allegations of Sexual Misconduct and Child Abuse cases
  • USA Archery may investigate and resolve Emotional Misconduct, Physical Misconduct, and MAAPP violations, or cases in which the Center declines jurisdiction.

This collaborative structure ensures that every report is handled by the appropriate authority, with care, expertise, and integrity.

Athlete safety isn’t just about meeting standards - it’s about creating a culture where respect, inclusion, and well-being are part of every practice and every competition.

From the shooting line to the sidelines, USA Archery is committed to making safety a shared responsibility - so every athlete can focus on what matters most: enjoying the sport they love.

Because when athletes feel safe, they perform at their best.
