Gator Cup youth champions crowned in Newberry

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Youth archers wrapped competition at the Gator Cup today with outstanding shooting in elimination matches in some intense sunshine, heat and breezy winds.

Sydney Sullenberger celebrated her 18th birthday on the field today, winning the U21 compound women’s gold. Sullenberger began her USAT circuit appearances with a silver medal on her 13th birthday at Gator Cup five years ago and is heading off to the Columbia University Varsity Archery Team in the fall to continue pursuing archery and a degree.

“It’s amazing, today was so much fun,” commented Sullenberger, who also qualified first in yesterday’s round. “I came into this tournament shooting my strong shot and this is what I ultimately wanted to happen, but a good way to ring in 18 for sure. I had a really strong cheering crowd with the support of my family and friends and that meant a lot.”

Another highlight today was the Roberts’ twins, Allison and Samantha both are coming home with gold medals for the U18 fixed pins and compound divisions while their mother Renee Roberts served as a judge for the tournament.

There was no shortage of incredible stories and successes on the field this weekend, including several archers who celebrated high school graduations, personal bests, new friendships and more.

Jacob Kim won his first gold USAT gold medal in the largest youth division; the U18 recurve men. Kim commented: “I think this is my first win for eliminations. I just kept focusing on my shooting and pushing forward and my goal is to keep winning more events.”

Complete results from the competition and live scores tomorrow as the senior and 50+ archers return to the field for matches can be found on Between Ends.
