GWANGJU, Korea – The USA gifted themselves a golden opportunity on day one of competition at the Hyundai World Archery Championships, which came in the shape of the compound division.
Olivia Dean, Alexis Ruiz and Sydney Sullenberger will tackle Mexico in the early hours of Sunday morning (U.S. time) in the final of the compound women’s team event. The trio began as fourth seeds, defeating Australia, Indonesia and Great Britain on their way to Sunday’s showdown.
It has been quite the start to her World Championship debut for Dean. She fired a personal best in practice, before leading the way in qualification.
“We had the absolute best team dynamic today and shot our best scores we’ve ever shot as a team,” Dean wrote on her Instagram. “I’m super excited to be shooting in the gold medal match tomorrow with these two ladies!
“Individually I shot very well today. I ended qualification with a 703 in a four-way tie for eighth place. After a close shootoff, where we all shot Xs, I ended up qualifying 10th out of 103 women!”

Elsewhere on Saturday, the compound men’s team of Curtis Broadnax, Grady Kane and James Lutz were edged out by India in the quarterfinals 234-233. India will contest the gold medal match. A similar story unfolded in the compound mixed team event. Broadnax and Dean lost a shootoff to the Netherlands in the 1/8th round. The Netherlands will also shoot for gold on Sunday.
On an individual level, Lutz clearly moved into his stride as qualification progressed. His first 36 arrows produced 348 points, which had him ranked at 65. He rallied remarkably in the back end, firing 355, which was third best shooting. He heads into Sunday’s eliminations as the 29th seed.
