CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The world-class archery facility in southern California will host the first of two events to determine national champions within the Olympic Archery in Schools (OAS) program.
Almost 200 archers will compete inside the Easton Archery Center of Excellence on Saturday. A similar number will see action at the equally-impressive Easton Newberry Archery Center in Florida next weekend.
There will be four bow disciplines – barebow, basic compound, compound and recurve – across two age and four class divisions.
In California, the morning session will involve middle school athletes. The Middle School Program will take aim at 60cm targets from nine meters. There will also be Middle School Elite archers, again shooting at 60cm but from 18 meters.
High school student-athletes will be in action on Saturday afternoon. Junior Varsity stand at 18 meters with a 60cm target face, while Varsity has a 40cm target from the same distance.
You can follow along with all the scores and results, as well as enjoy photos from each of Saturday’s two sessions.
OAS is a program for middle schools and high schools. Eligible students at participating schools can join their archery team and compete with other participating school teams.
By offering archery within schools, instructors provide an opportunity to participate for youth who may not typically participate in a sport to connect and grow on a team.
USA Archery has this year offered expanded competition categories in the OAS program to include recurve, barebow, basic compound (middle school) and compound (high school).
