Texas Shootout Champions Excel Despite Tricky Breeze

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Breezy conditions didn't stop Zachary Garrett (Chula Vista, California), Michelle Gibert (College Station, Texas), Erika Jones (Grand Island, Nebraska) and Henry Bass (Provo, Utah) from reaching the podium. These archers proved they had what it took to face down very tough competition, and prevail despite the tricky breeze for which Texas is notorious.

Today's elimination round matchplay began under cloudy skies with cool temperatures, but things quickly heated up on and off the field, as the sun - and archery talent - came out to play.

In the compound women's division, Jones took the gold medal after a close match with Brogan Williams (Stillwater, Oklahoma), who took the silver. Lexi Keller (Omro, Wisconsin) won bronze in a close match with Easter Brock (Sandy, Utah).

The recurve men's category saw new and veteran talent take to the podium. Garrett won the gold medal after a back and forth match with Olympic gold and bronze medalist Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Connecticut); Collin Klimitchek (Chula Vista, California) won gold versus Daniel McLaughlin (Chula Vista, California).

For the compound men, Bass only saw gold after a very close contest with World Cup Final champion Bridger Deaton (Pella, Iowa). Reo Wilde of Pocatello, Idaho won the bronze medal, edging out Marc Gruber (Stevens Point, Wisconsin).

Gilbert won one of the closest matches of the day, facing off with five time Olympian Khatuna Lorig (West Hollywood, California) for the recurve women's gold. Bronze went to Mackenzie Brown, who won her medal after a tight contest with LaNola Pritchard, both of Chula Vista, California.
