CHULA VISTA, California - The SoCal Showdown continued today with individual eliminations and team gold finals. Many of the individual gold medals will be contested tomorrow at the San Diego County Fair.
Expecting to draw a large crowd, Olympian Jacob Wukie is looking forward to shooting with Collin Klimitchek for the gold: "I'm excited for the exposure it will be for the sport and the opportunity to shoot and represent sponsors. I think it's a step in the right direction for USAT events."
Mackenzie Brown, who will shoot with Khatuna Lorig for gold agreed: "I think it's going to be a great venue, hopefully we'll get a lot more spectators that wouldn't normally see archery - get archery in the public view and I think it will be very good for our sport."
She added: "Khatuna is a very veteran shooter and I have a feeling that I'm pretty veteran too, so I'm thinking it will be a very good smack down; we've both been shooting really well lately. Being teammates will make it even that much more fun, like our match in Vegas. Obviously I'm hoping for a better turnout for myself, but I think it'll be a really good match."
U.S. World Cup team members Reo Wilde, Steve Anderson and Braden Gellenthien, aka the Notorious Bullseye Shooters, joined forces for the compound men's team gold. Anderson joked: "We have a couple of new guys, all three of us really, but we're fresh talent and we're ready to knock some heads. Our opponents were formidable, just not so much at archery."
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Archery Team, Brady Ellison, Zach Garrett and Jake Kaminski also shot as a team and took gold after winning each match in straight 6-0 sets. After winning bronze in their first debut competing together last week in Antalya, Turkey, it was great to see the team finish with the event title heading into the Games. Ellison commented: "It's good practice for us, we actually shot really good. We're just getting better and better and we'll be able to rotate and play at Nationals and we'll be ready to go in Rio."
