COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Collegiate Target Regionals are upon us, starting on Wednesday in Kentucky at the University of the Cumberlands, the first of six events throughout April.
University of the Cumberlands are the leading lights on the collegiate scene, and they will host around 160 archers from Wednesday to Saturday.
This event – including the standard 72-arrow qualification round, team rounds, mixed team rounds and eliminations – will also hold the Mid-South Conference Championship at the UC All-Purpose Field in Williamsburg.
Kris Strebeck is Head Archery Coach for the Cumberlands Patriots and said, “The region gets stronger and stronger each year and I'm expecting the same thing this year. We will have some highly contested divisions.”
Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA will host the second event of the Collegiate Target Regionals, from April 14-16.
From here, the North, West and East regions are then in action. Southeastern Illinois College will welcome archers to the Chuck Hearn Outdoor Complex in Harrisburg from April 21-23. At the same time, UC Davis Aggie Archery will host their event in Sacramento, Calif. and James Madison University will stage a two-day regionals event that weekend in Harrisonburg, VA.
Head Coach at JMU, Andy Puckett, said “In the East we are seeing a few new teams added by schools that have no history of archery. This is very encouraging to those of us that have worked for years to see more teams added.”
And while outdoor archery is often at the mercy of Mother Nature, Puckett points out “At JMU we like to think that we have one of the premiere locations and fields to host regionals.
“The turf grass field immediately adjacent to our practice field gives us the flexibility needed to run whatever tournament type we like. The field is lighted to allow for night shooting, if needed due to weather delays.”
The Collegiate Target Regionals will conclude in Mississippi from April 29-30, and is hosted by William Carey University.
Their head coach, Johnnie Stinson, spoke of the continued growth within the sport at the collegiate level, saying “I'm experiencing this on the William Carey team, as is the case with other teams in the state. I'm actually seeing more people becoming aware of collegiate archery and wanting to compete. A good number of these archers have only competed in archery in the school programs and are new to this type of competition.”
This year the South Central event will be at a new venue, the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg, granting easier access for archers and spectators.
