In-form U.S. archers get set to challenge a deeper field at the World Archery Para Series

NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic – Stage #2 of the inaugural World Archery Para Series, which begins on Tuesday, involves 12 leading archers from the United States, including Paralympians and world champions.

In total, 167 archers from 29 countries will compete at the event, which runs until Saturday. Official practice took place on Monday, with qualification rounds scheduled for Tuesday.

Stage #1 took place in Bangkok, Thailand in April, from where Jason Tabansky returned with a silver medal in W1 men. There were 113 archers from 21 nations present for the opening stage in the series.

World number one and Paralympic champion Tabansky is part of a much larger team in Nove Mesta. Along with Karen Sternfeld, who competed in para recurve women in Bangkok, the USA team of 12 in Nove Mesto also boasts Paralympians KJ Polish (para compound men) and Jordan White (para recurve men). All three were gold medalists at the Easton Foundations SoCal Showdown earlier this month.

Polish leads a strong group of para compound men, with Ben Thompson and Ephraim Tonn-Bourg alongside. Polish and Thompson were gold medalists in Compound Open Men Doubles at last year’s World Archery Para Championships.

Sternfeld has Candice Caesar as part of the para recurve women contingent, while para compound women consist of Catalina Bustamante, Wendy Gardner and Brandi Iannoli.

Looking ahead to qualification, Iannoli said, “With some final touches with coaching on form during official practice here in Czech Republic, I feel confident and comfortable going into qualifications tomorrow. I just need to settle and shoot my bow with what I know. I am pretty confident that I can and will do great.”

Tabansky will be among the favorites in W1 men, where he is joined by the ever-improving pair of Ryan Lindstrom and Kyle Hansel.

The schedule for the next five days is:

  • Tuesday: Compound, recurve and W1 qualifying
  • Wednesday: Eliminations
  • Thursday: Eliminations
  • Friday: VI qualifying and team finals
  • Saturday: Individual finals
