Top Takeaways from Qualification at the SoCal Showdown

CHULA VISTA, California -The 2017 Doinker SoCal Showdown hosted qualification rounds for all juniors, collegiate and senior archers in the morning and all cadets and masters in the afternoon. Most of the morning session was greeted by a comfortable cloud cover and a consistent wind, but the sky cleared and the sun came out with stronger winds towards the end and continued through the afternoon.

The compound senior men's division was as tight as ever with positions changing throughout the day as mere points separated the top archers. After 18 arrows, Kris Schaff and Bridger Deaton were each only down 1 point, but as the day progressed, Braden Gellenthien's 718 world record stayed safely out of reach and he slid in to take the top qualification spot with a 712.

"We shot well both halves, you have to have a good first half and then hang on the second," shared second place qualifier Steve Anderson. "Tomorrow, come eliminations, we'll probably experience the same thing with weather, you hope not to have any upsets in the opening rounds and then it's just arrow for arrow with the guy next to you, you take what you're given and try to put them all in and that's really all you can do."

The recurve cadet men, by far the largest division on the field with about 60 athletes was led by 14-year old Josef James Scarboro: "There were a lot of good shooters today, and it's one of the biggest tournaments of the year," he commented. "I felt confident in my shot from when we started this morning and it just kept going all day. We had so many good shooters and competition was tight. I've been working on my mental game and focusing on my keyword; the thing I can do before the shot that helps me relax and focus."

Competition resumes tomorrow with elimination matches for the top 64 archers in each division. Complete results from today are available here. For more, follow USA Archery on FacebookTwitter, and Instagramand join the fun with #SoCalShowdown!
