Team USA Opens Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The Youth Olympic Games is the world's most premier international multisport event for young athletes. Held every four years between the main Olympic Games, this is the third installment and the archery competition features 32 boys and 32 girls from nations around the globe, born between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003.

Trenton Cowles (Tarzana, California) and Catalina GNoriega (Chula Vista, California) are representing Team USA in Buenos Aires. In addition to individual competitions, the Youth Olympic Games includes an unusual mixed team event. Not only does it mix genders but it also mixes athletes of different nationalities.

Cowles, who won junior men's team bronze at the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships, individual silver and team and mixed team gold as a junior at the Pan American Games earlier this year is a strong contender with more international experience than many of the other male competitors. Posting a 330 and 335 in qualification today, Cowles seeded 15th.

"I want to do my best for the country to uphold our reputation and make everyone proud," shared Cowles. With the 2020 Olympics as his ultimate goal, Cowles added, "this is a great step because it's gives me the same kind of pressure and experience that I hope to see at the actual Olympics and the trials leading up to the Olympics."

GNoriega, qualified 14th for the women, scoring 320 and 322 over this morning's session.

For the unique team round, the top ranked male archer was paired with the bottom ranked female archer, and so on. GNoriega was paired with Cuba's Hazael Rodriguez for a 7th place seed and Cowles will compete with Namibia's Quinn Reddig, seeded 18th.

Competition continues this weekend with mixed team eliminations and finals over the next two days and individual eliminations Monday through Wednesday with the girls' finals on Tuesday and the boys' finals on Wednesday. Like the Olympic Games, each elimination match will be held in the special finals venue, one at a time, for an incredible experience for all.

Complete results from the competition are available at www.worldarchery.org. October 14-17, matches will be available live at www.olympicchannel.com/live.
