Ellison Turns World Record Qualification into Gold Finish at World Cup Opener

MARRAKESH, Morocco - After setting a world record in qualification Saturday, Brady Ellison wrapped the first stage of the Indoor Archery World Cup season on top of the podium with gold. Caroline McCracken also earned hardware for the U.S., taking silver in the compound junior women's division.

"I really can't wait to get this bow out when I feel I am tournament ready," Ellison told World Archery after the win. "It's so smooth, it's so easy to shoot. This tournament has opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities." In his final match, Ellison posted four straight sets of 30 to take the win 6-2 over Italy's Fissore, who shot two 30s to split the first two sets.

Braden Gellenthien won this event in 2013 and 2014, and took bronze last year. This year, after qualifying 5th, Gellenthien faced USA's Alex Wifler in the quarterfinals and took the win 147-146 before falling to top qualifier, Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands 147-146 in the semifinals. In the bronze final, Viktor Orosz of Hungary took the win 149-148, closing Gellenthien out of a return podium finish.

Earlier in the matches, Wifler had upset top U.S. qualifier David Houser, who had ranked third after scoring on Saturday. Meanwhile, 18th seed Aaron Tedford was also eliminated in the 1/8th round.

Cassidy Cox, who led the U.S. compound women in scoring ranking 6th in qualification, worked her way through the brackets. When No. 3 seed Sarah Sonnischen of Denmark was upset in the 1/8th, Cox ended up facing Denmark's Louise Larsen in the quarterfinals instead. Cox took a solid 146-143 win to advance to the semifinals where she fell to Italy's Marcella Tonioli, who had eliminated USA's Dahlia Crook in the 1/8th round. Cox then faced Slovenia's Toja Ellison for the bronze; Ellison clinched the win 145-144.

Laura Bennett Shelton was the last U.S. recurve woman left in competition Sunday morning, but was knocked out in the 1/8th 6-0 by Estonia's Reena Parnat.
