USA Archery announces Paralympic Games Athlete Selection Procedures for Paris 2024

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In a little over a year, the Paralympic Games will begin in Paris and the archers hoping to represent the USA now know what they need to do to make the team.

The 2024 Paralympic Trials Qualification and Trials events will be comprised of three stages:

  • Stage #1 Paralympic Trials Qualification Event will be held with the 2024 USAT Event # 1.
  • Stage #2 Paralympic Trials Qualification Event will be held with the 2024 USAT Event # 2. Following Stage #2 there will be a cut to the top eight.
  • Stage #3 Paralympic Trials will be a stand-alone event following the 2024 USAT Event # 2.

The newly released 2024 Paralympic Games Athlete Selection Procedures explain in detail the rounds that will be competed in each stage of the U.S. Team trials and how cumulative points will be awarded. USA Archery has also announced its 2024 Paralympic Games Staff Selection Procedures.

“The U.S. Team Trials are designed to select top athletes from the U.S. to participate in the 2024 Paralympic Games,” said Chief of Sport Performance & Operations, Mary Emmons.

“The athletes are inspiring and train incredibly hard for years for the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the Games and thus also remain focused on earning the remaining quota slots available. The fans will be cheering for them every step of the way.”

As with the Olympic Games qualification process, archers do not qualify for the Paralympics directly but must win quota places for their country.

To date, three quota slots have been earned by the USA, with all claimed during the World Archery Para Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic in July. They include one recurve open male slot and two compound open male slots. Each country can win a maximum of two quota places in each category for the 2024 Paralympic Games.

The next opportunity to win quota slots will be at the 2023 Para Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile in November, with the third and final qualifier being in Dubai, UAE in February 2024.

The top two athletes in the U.S. Team Trials will be nominated to the 2024 Paralympic Games team, dependent on the number of quota slots available.

There will be nine events at next year’s Paralympic Games. Unlike the Olympic Games, where only recurve is present, the Paralympics includes compound also.

Archery at the Paralympics will see medals won in men’s individual W1, men’s individual compound open, men’s individual recurve open, women’s individual W1, women’s individual compound open, women’s individual recurve open, mixed team W1, mixed team compound and mixed team recurve.

The archery venue for next year's Paralympic Games is Invalides, a stunning green space by the banks of the River Seine. The Paralympic Games archery will involve a maximum of 140 competitors, with competition starting August 29 and running through until September 5.
