RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Reigning recurve men’s champion Brady Ellison got his Indoor World Series defense off to the perfect start with victory at the Rio Indoor 250 on Sunday.
The world number one has won the Indoor World Series the past two years and – having taken top seed after qualification with 597/600 – he edged the gold medal with a 6-4 win over Thomas Chirault (FRA).
“It’s awesome to come away with a win,” Ellison told Archery+ TV. “That was a different kind of finals match than you generally want. Neither one of us shot overly well. We both gave each an opportunity every end and I was lucky to come out on top.”
Nicholas D’Amour was seeded four following qualification, after firing 593. He went out at the quarterfinal stage to Santiago Arcila (COL) having begun eliminations with 6-0 and 7-1 wins.
And while this was a third Indoor World Series stage for D’Amour – he also shot in Switzerland and Luxembourg – Ellison was making his first appearance, having not competed in any of the opening three stages. This was one of two brand-new 250-point tournaments, with the other being in Mexico in mid-February.
Three more stages remain, with Ellison expected to compete in Nimes, France next month, as well as the series finale in Las Vegas.
The USA is expected to have a good many archers heading to Europe. As well as Ellison and D’Amour, there will be compound archers Curtis Broadnax and Sawyer Sullivan, recurve talent in the shape of Christian Stoddard and Samantha Ensign, with barebow represented by the likes of Medina Otajagic.
