U.S. Archery Team Enjoys Most Successful Indoor World Championships Ever

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 29, 2005

The 24-member U.S. Archery team has returned to the United States with
plenty of hardware following the most successful Indoor World Championships
ever for the team. U.S. archers won four individual world titles, four team
titles, set five new world records, and earned 14 medals overall, tops among
the 37 countries competing at the 8th World Indoor Archery Championships,
March 23-27, in Aalborg, Denmark.

The U.S. tallied 11 of their 14 overall medals in the compound division as
Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) and Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) won
senior division world titles – the second straight Indoor World Championship
title for Wilde. Zorn set two new world records by scoring a perfect 120 in
her quarterfinal match and by accumulating a 356 out of a possible 360 in
the individual finals. Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz.) and Tiffany Reeves
(Helena, Mont.) won world titles for the Junior Compound. Also claiming
medals in compound were Jamie Van Natta (senior bronze/Toledo, Ohio), Erika
Anschutz (junior silver/Grand Island, Neb.) and David Roth (junior
bronze/Lowell, Mich.).

The U.S. also swept all four team titles in the compound division as well.
The U.S. men’s team of Wilde, Rod Menzer (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Dave Cousins
(Standish, Maine) shot their way to a new world record in team competition,
scoring 269 points (out of a possible 270) to beat the previous record (267)
that dated back to 1995.

The recurve division saw two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.)
take home a silver medal among the men’s senior archers. Wunderle shot a
perfect 120 in his quarterfinal match and defeated the reigning Olympic gold
and silver medalists on his way to the final. Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne,
Wyo.), a 2004 Olympian and 2003 World Indoor Championships silver medalist,
placed fourth in the women’s senior division. Junior archer Aaron Tedford
(Great Falls, Mont.) won an individual bronze while the junior women’s team
of Lindsay Pian (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Stephanie Rowland (Orchard Park, N.Y)
and Andrea Garner (Port Lavaca, Texas) went on to win a bronze medal as
well.

Also in the men’s senior recurve division four-time Olympian Butch Johnson
(Woodstock, Conn.) finished 10th while Staten Holmes (San Antonio, Texas)
finished 12th. Other finishers in the senior women’s recurve division
included Kathleen McCart (Tucson, Ariz.) with an eighth-place finish and
Jennifer’s younger sister Amanda (Cheyenne, Wyo.) finishing her first World
Championships in 21st place.

In the junior women’s compound division, Aprilyn Witt (Waddell, Ariz.)
finished fourth and in the junior men’s compound division, Stephen Schwade
(Monroe, N.Y.) finished sixth. In the junior men’s recurve division Dan
Schuller (Mercer, Penn.) finished sixth and teammate Josh Anderson (College
Station, Texas) finished 21st. The third member of the senior women’s
compound team, Amber Dawson (Robesonia, Penn.) finished seventh
individually. In senior recurve team competition, the U.S. men finished
fifth while the women finished fourth.

The 8th FITA (International Archery Federation) World Championships were the
largest indoor archery event in the federation’s history with nearly 400
competitors. The U.S. team was selected following competition at the World
Indoor Trials, January 15-16, in Hillsboro, Texas.
