COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ninety-five archers from 23 countries competed in Duisburg, Germany July 15-17 for the archery event at the 2005 World Games. Four men and two women represented the U.S. with Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) winning the silver medal in the women’s compound category and Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) taking home the bronze for the U.S. in men’s compound.
Van Natta ended the qualification round in third place with a 701 for the compound women and went on to beat Petra Friedl (Austria) in the semifinals. In the gold medal match, Van Natta lost to Germany’s Martina Schacht, claiming the silver, while Schacht took home the gold. Friedl won the bronze medal. Sally Wunderle (Peoria, Ill.) finished in sixth place for the compound women.
Cousins, the reigning men’s compound World Games Champion, shot a perfect score of 360 in both Friday and Saturday’s qualification rounds, which is the first time this has been done at a World Games. Cousins ended the qualification round in first place with a total score of 720. Cousins went on to win the bronze medal after being defeated by Sweden’s Morgan Lundin in the semifinals and then beating Christopher White (Great Britain) in a shoot off for the bronze. Lundin went on to win the gold and Slovenia’s Dejan Sitar took the silver in the men’s compound category. The U.S.’s John Dudley (Sparta, Wis.) finished in seventh place.
The U.S. had two competitors in the men’s recurve category as well. Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished in 15th place and George Tekmitchov (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished in 20th place.
