COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Over 60 archers including Olympians and World Champions from around the country are expected to compete for a spot on the 2005 World Target Championship Team at the 2005 World Target Trials, which will be held May 12-15 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The 2005 World Target Championships will be held June 20-26 in Madrid Spain.
Recurve and Compound bow men and women archers will be competing for a spot on the 2005 World Target Team. Among the archers competing include number one ranked and two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.), forty-nine year old four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) and fourth ranked Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas), who were all members of the 2003 World Target Team. Third ranked Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y) and sixth ranked Jason McKittrick (Holton, Ind.), who was the 2000 and 2004 Olympic team alternate, will also be competing in the men’s recurve category.
In the women’s recurve category, number one ranked and 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) along with her sister and fellow 2005 World Indoor Championship teammate Amanda Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) as well as fifty-one year old three-time Olympian Janet Dykman (El Monte, Calif.) and 2004 Olympian Stephanie White-Arnold (Portland, Ind.) will all be vying for spots on the 2005 World Target Team. Jennifer Nichols and Janet Dykman were both members of the 2003 World Target Team. Sixteen-year-old Kendra Harvey (Rio Rancho, N.M.), who was the 2004 Olympic Team Alternate, will also be competing at the trials.
All four members of the 2003 Men’s Compound World Target Championship Team that won the team gold in New York City will be competing for a spot on the 2005 World Target Team. Those archers include Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine), Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.), 2005 World Indoor double gold medalist Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) and his father Dee Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho). Rod Menzer (Sheboygan, Wis.) a member of the 2005 World Indoor Championship Team and 2005 World Games team member John Dudley (Sparta, Wis.) will also be competing for a spot on the World Target Team for men’s compound.
On the women’s compound side, 2003 World Target Championship and 2005 World Indoor Championship double gold medalist and world record holder Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) along with 2005 World Indoor individual bronze and team gold medalist Jamie Van Natta (Toldeo, Ohio), 2003 World Target Championship team gold medalist Aya LaBrie (Great Falls, Mont.) and 2005 World Games team member Sally Wunderle (Peoria, Ill.) will try for a spot on the World Team. Sixteen-year-old 2005 World Indoor Championship silver medalist Erika Anschutz (Grand Island, Neb.) will also be competing.
World Target Trials competition will begin on Thursday, May 12. The top 16 men and women in each category with the highest scores at the end of the day will qualify to move on to the Round Robin matches on Friday and Saturday. Following competition on Saturday, the field will be cut down to eight men and eight women in each category with the remaining archers moving on to the conclusion of the Round Robin matches on Sunday. At the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday, points will be tabulated and the top four of the remaining eight men and women in both the recurve and compound categories will make up the 2005 U.S. World Target Championship Team.
