Wunderle, Cousins, Van Natta take home National Field Titles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Three 2005 World Championship team members who will be traveling to Madrid, Spain next week for the World Target Championships won National Field titles over the weekend at the National Field Championships in Spokane, Wash., which were hosted by Evergreen Archery Club.

Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) won the title for the male recurve category and five-time National Field Champion Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) finished in first for men’s compound, while Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) took first in the women’s compound category.

Wunderle took the National Field title this year from two-time Olympian (1988 gold and silver medalist) Jay Barrs (Salt Lake City, Utah), who was the National Field Champion in 2004 and has previously won the National Field Championships 15 times. Barrs finished this year’s championships in third place. Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.), a 2005 World Target Championship team member and 2005 World Games team member finished the event in second place.

Cousins and Van Natta were also members of the 2004 World Field Championship team and are members of the 2005 World Games team. The 2005 World Games will be held June 14-17 in Duisburg, Germany.

Erika “Aya” LaBrie (Great Falls, Mont.), a 2003 World Target Championship Team Gold Medalist and a 2002 and 2004 World Field Team member won the National Field title in the women’s recurve category.

Other winners at the 2005 National Field Championships include: master’s men’s compound – Wayne Davidson (Peoria, Ariz.), junior boy’s compound – Ben Werner (Cody, Wyo.), cadet boy’s compound – Charlie Ward (Aurora, Ill.), master men’s recurve – David Brandfass (Lighthouse Point, Fla.), senior men’s barebow – 2004 World Field team member Ty Pelfry (Penn Valley, Calif.), senior women’s barebow – 2004 World Field team member Becky Nelson-Harris (Auburn, Calif.) master men’s barebow – Harold Rush (Payson, Ariz.).

“The 2005 National Field was a very well run event in a beautiful location,” said USA Archery High Performance Director Tom Parrish, who finished 2nd in the men’s compound category. “The course was challenging and fun to shoot. Many thanks should go to Evergreen Archery Club and Jim Cowgill for their hard work in putting on this event.”
