PHOENIX, Ariz. – Nearly 200 archers including Olympians, world champions, national champions and world record holders from 22 states and five countries competed this past weekend at the Arizona Cup. The Arizona State Archery Association hosted the event at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Arizona Cup is a national ranking event and one of five qualifying events for membership to the United States Archery Team (USAT). The event featured many of archery’s top recurve and compound shooters from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Denmark and Poland.
Winning the 2005 Arizona Cup in the Men’s Recurve category was Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.). McGlyn beat Crispin Duenas (Ontario Canada) easily 110-100 in the finals. Mark Hainline (San Diego, Calif.) defeated two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) 104-101 in the quarterfinal match, then beat out Poland’s Piotr Piatek 106-105 in the bronze medal match.
Taking home the gold in the women's recurve category was 2004 Olympic Team Alternate Kendra Harvey (Rio Rancho, N.M.). Harvey defeated Columbia University’s Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill.) 104-92 in the gold medal match. Miller shot her way to the finals after beating out 2004 Olympian and number one ranked Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) 105-102 in the semifinals. Nichols went on to take the bronze after beating UCLA’s Kate Anderson (Los Angeles, Calif.) 107-100.
In the Men's Compound category, Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) defeated last year’s Arizona Cup Champion, John Dudley (Sparta, Wis.) 117-114 to claim the gold. Canada’s Kevin Brayford took the bronze after defeating Dave Stepp (Mesa, Arizona) 118-116.
The Women's Compound winner for the second year in a row was 2005 World Indoor Champion Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas). Zorn defeated Texas A&M University’s Jessica Grant 112-108 to take home the gold. Winning the bronze was Jessica Mattson (Canton, Mich.), who defeated Sally Wunderle (Peoria, Ill.) 113-105.
