ATHENS, Greece - Men's Archery competition began this evening with the ranking round at the Dekelia Archery Training Complex. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson led the way for the U.S. with a 16th place finish.
Top-ranked Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) finished in the 16th spot with a score of 660. Finishing in 43rd place with a score of 639 was 2000 Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and John Magera (Carterville, Ill.) finished close behind Wunderle in 47th place with 637.
"Overall I think we started out slow, then Butch picked up and shot very well," said U.S. Men's Coach Frank Thomas (College Station, Texas). "Vic had a rough day, but the good think about this tournament is that you can be in 64th right now and still win the gold. Our goal is to go in on Monday and win the first match, then go from there."
The U.S. Men's Team shot a total score of 1936 to put them in 11th place for the Team Round on August 21.
In ranking round competition, the archers shoot 72 arrows total at 70 meters. The total scores of the ranking round place the athletes in their brackets from one to 64 for the start of the round of 32 elimination on Monday.
Regular competition for archery begins Sunday, August 15 at Panathinaiko Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games took place, and runs through Sunday August 21. Women's round of 32 elimination will take place on the 15th and the men's round of 32 elimination will be held on the 16th.
