2006 Junior World Archery Championship Team Named
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 6, 2006) – The 2006 Junior World Championship team was determined today after the completion of round robin match play at the Jr. World Trials. A team of 24 archers will travel to Merida, Mexico October 14-21 for the 9th Junior World Archery Championships. The team will consist of male and female junior and cadet compound and recurve archers.
The 2006 Jr. World Championship Team members will include:

Ellison, Nichols, Cousins and Denmark’s Soemod Claim U.S. Open Titles
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 5, 2006) – The 10th Annual U.S. Open concluded the 122nd National Target Championships today with Brady Ellison (Chula Vista, Calif.), 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) and Denmark’s Camilla Soemod capturing titles in their respective categories.
For men’s recurve, 2006 Junior National Target Champion Ellison faced Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) in the semifinals and won the match 108-107 to face Canada’s Crispin Duenas in the finals. Duenas beat Shawn Rice (Albuquerque, N.M.) 112-100 in the semifinals. Ellison won the gold after defeating Duenas 109-100. Rice won the bronze medal match, beating McGlyn 106-101.
In the women’s recurve category, Nichols faced 2004 and 2005 U.S. Open Champion and three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.) in the semifinals and won the match 111-99. Stephanie Rowland (Orchard Park, N.Y.) faced 2005 Junior National Target Champion Maggie Huff (Tucson, Ariz.) in the semifinals and took the match 107-105, advancing to the finals where she faced Nichols. Nichols claimed the gold after beating Rowland 108-102 in the finals. Lorig won the bronze, defeating Huff 110-96.
Eight-time National Target Champion Cousins won the gold for the compound men at the U.S. Open today, beating Logan Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) in the semifinals 115-112, then beating John Dudley (Sparta, Wis.) 112-111 in the finals. Dudley defeated Jedd Greshock (Shenandoah, Pa.) 113-110 to advance to the finals. Wilde faced Greshock in the bronze medal match and won 115-113.
Soemod faced Amanda Rafaelli (Bartonville, Texas) in the semifinals, where she took the match 111-105 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Soemod defeated 2006 Junior National Target Champion Erika Anschutz (Grand Island, Neb.) 113-112 to claim the gold. Anschutz defeated Jahna Davis (Helena, Mont.) 111-100 in the semifinals. Davis faced Rafaelli in the bronze medal match and Rafaelli won the match 114-113 to take home the bronze.
Wunderle, Scavotto, Cousins and Van Natta Win National Titles
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 4, 2006) – The 2006 National Target Champions were determined today, bringing an end to the 122nd National Target Championships and setting the stage for tomorrow’s 9th Annual U.S. Open. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and 2000 Olympian Karen Scavotto (Enfield, Conn.) captured national titles for recurve, while Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) and Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) took the national titles on the compound side.
Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) took the National Title in the men’s recurve category for the second year in a row after finishing with a score of 2640. Tim Meyers (Ft. Worth, Texas) took second with 2604, while four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) finished in third place with 2595.
After not competing for two years, 2000 Olympian Karen Scavotto took the 2006 National title for the recurve women with a final score of 2632. Three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Stanhope, N.J.) finished in second with 2630, while 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) took third place with 2591.
Cousins won his eighth consecutive National Title today for the compound men after finishing with a score of 2784. Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.) took second with 2781 and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) finished in third place with 2779.
Van Natta, who set a new world record of 1402 for a single FITA on Wednesday claimed her third consecutive National Title for the compound women, after finishing the tournament with a score of 2786. Jahna Davis (Helena, Mont.) finished in second with 2763, while Sally (Wunderle) Seipp (Peoria, Ill.) took third with a score of 2722.
Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.), a 2004 Paralympic bronze medalist, won the National Title in the AR-1 male compound category with a score of 2705. Chuck Lear (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), a 2004 Paralympian, took third place with 1825. Kevin Stone (Kodak, Tenn.), Fabry’s 2004 Paralympic team bronze medal teammate, finished in first place in the AR-2 male recurve category with 2261.
Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Vista, Texas), a 2004 Paralympian, finished in 24th place in the Senior women’s recurve category with a total score of 2344.
Janice Walth (Lodi, Calif.), the first ever blind archer to compete at a U.S. National Championship, finished the tournament with a score of 1347 in the visually impaired (VI) compound bow category.
Over 450 archers from around the country including Olympians, Paralympians, World Champions, United States Archery Team (USAT) members, world record holders, top junior archers and international archers from Bolivia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico and South Africa competed for the national title in Colorado Springs this week.
Tomorrow will conclude the tournament with the 10th Annual U.S. Open, a head-to-head elimination round or Olympic Round (OR) where archers shoot from a distance of 70 meters. This OR competition is the same format used during the Olympic Games. The U.S. Open features both U.S. and foreign competitors.
The 2006 Jr. World Team Trials are also being held in conjunction with the National Championships and will conclude on Sunday, August 6 with the top 64 junior and cadet finishers from the Nationals Championships competing in round robin match play. The Jr. World Trials will decide the team for the 2006 Junior World Championships in Mexico this October.

The National Champions will be determined following the completion of the FITA short distances tomorrow.
Wunderle continues to hold the lead for the recurve men with a score of 1951, while Tim Meyers (Ft. Worth, Texas) remains in second with 1941. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) jumped into the third spot today with a score of 1928.
Scavotto remains in first for the recurve women after finishing the day with a score of 1960. Three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Stanhope, N.J.) is close behind her in second with 1959, while 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) continues to hold third the third spot with a score of 1939.

(August 2, 2006) - The first half of the 2006 National Target Championships came to a close today as the FITA short distances were completed during the second full day of competition. Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) set a world record and remains in the lead for the compound women, while Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) is still holding first place for the compound men. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and 2000 Olympian Karen Scavotto (Enfield, Conn.) are leading the way for recurve.
Wunderle took the lead for the recurve men after finishing the day with a score of 1322. Tim Meyers (Ft. Worth, Texas) is in second with 1311 and Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas) jumped into third place with a score of 1307. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) is right behind Krueger in fourth place with 1306.
Scavotto jumped into the lead today for the recurve women with a score of 1330. Three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Stanhope, N.J.) is right behind her in second with 1329, while 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) continues to hold third place with 1309.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 1, 2006) – Over 450 athletes gathered at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs, Colo. today to kick off the 122nd National Target Championships.
Among those competing for the National title include Olympians, Paralympians, World Champions, United States Archery Team (USAT) members, world record holders, top junior archers and international archers from Bolivia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico and South Africa.
For the recurve men, Tim Meyers (Ft. Worth, Texas) is in the lead with a score of 641. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) is right behind Meyers in second with 640, while four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) is in third with a total score of 632.
Local archer Nathan McCullough (University of Colorado, Colorado Springs) is holding 29th place in the male recurve category with a score of 568.
In the women’s recurve competition, three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Stanhope, N.J.) is in first place with a score of 666, while 2000 Olympian Karen Scavotto (Enfield, Conn.) is in second with 660. Number one ranked Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), a 2004 Olympian, is in third with 645.
Jedd Greshock (Shenandoah, Pa.) is in first place for the compound men with a score of 689. Last year’s National Champion Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) is in second with 686, while Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.) is right behind him in third place with 685.
For the compound women, 2005 National Champion Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) is holding the top spot with a score of 700, while Jahna Davis (Helena, Mont.) is in second with 685. Sandra Swirles-Duncan (Romulus, Mich.) is in third place with a score of 680.
On the Paralympic side, 2004 Paralympic bronze medalist and 2005 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Champion Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) leads the way for the AR-1 male compound category with a score of 673. Chuck Lear (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), a 2004 Paralympic Team member, is in third with 369. Kevin Stone (Kodak, Tenn.), Fabry’s 2004 Paralympic team bronze medal teammate is in first place in the AR-2 male recurve category with 529.
Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Vista, Texas), a 2004 Paralympian, is in 23rd place in the Senior women’s recurve category with a score of 573 and is also in first place in the AR-Standing female recurve category.
Janice Walth (Lodi, Calif.) is making her first appearance at the Nationals shooting in the visually impaired compound bow category. She ended today with a score 276. Walth is the first blind archer ever in the U.S. to compete in a national competition.
