Rice, Pian, Price and Colin Win National Titles at 2006 National Indoor Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Over 1500 athletes from around the country competed at the 2006 National Archery Association (NAA) National Indoor Championships and Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) National Indoor Championships, which were held over three weekends in February and March.

The tournaments took place February 24-26, March 3-5 and March 10-12 at 10 different regional locations throughout the United States including Fairbanks, Alaska, Tulare, Calif., Macon, Ga., East Lansing, Mich., Murphysboro, Ill., College Station, Texas, Andover, Mass., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Harrisonburg, Va. and Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the Male Senior Recurve category, 2005 U.S. Open Bronze Medalist Shawn Rice (Albuquerque, N.M.) took first place easily with a score of 1176. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) finished in second with 1167 and Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) took third with 1160. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) took the fifth spot with a score of 1150 and 2004 Olympian John Magera (Carterville, Ill.) also shot an 1150 finishing right behind Johnson in sixth place.

For the senior recurve women, Arizona State University’s Lindsay Pian (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won the National Title with a score of 1124. That score also secured a National Title for Pian in the Female College Recurve category. Chula Vista Resident Athlete Joy Fahrenkrog (Castle Rock, Colo.) took second in the Female Senior Recurve category with 1121 and Columbia University’s Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill.) took third with 1118, also finishing second for the college recurve women.

Duane Price (Greenfield, Wis.) took the National Title in the Male Senior Compound category with a score of 1188, while 2005 World Indoor Championship Double Gold Medalist Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) took second with 1187. Reigning National Indoor Champion Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) finished in third place with 1185.

James Madison University’s Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.) who is a Junior World Champion as well as a two-time World Target Championship team gold medalist in the compound bow division finished in fourth place in the Male Senior Compound category with 1184. He won the Male College Compound category with that score and also finished in 39th place in the Male Senior Recurve category with a score of 1091. Gellenthien shot in the compound division at the Harrisonburg, Va. tournament and shot a recurve bow in Andover, Mass.

In the Senior Compound Women’s category, 2005 World Target Championship Team Gold Medalists Christie Colin (Cape May, N.J.) and Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) finished in first and second place respectively. Colin won the National Title easily with a score of 1181, while Van Natta shot a score of 1156. Kelly Ward (Greensboro, N.C.) took third with 1151.

Kevin Stone (Adrian, Mich.) a 2004 Paralympic Bronze Medalist took first place for the AR2 men with 1068, while 2005 IPC World Championship team member Russell Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) finished in second with 980.

For the AR3 Standing Recurve category, Karl Keranen (Silverado, Calif.) won the National Title for the men with a score of 919 and University of Texas student and 2004 Paralympian Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Visto, Texas) took first for the women with a score of 1081. Carmichael also finished in ninth place with her score of 1081 in the Female Senior Recurve category and sixth place in the Female College Recurve category.

In the AR Open Male category, 2004 Paralympic Bronze Medalist and 2005 IPC World Champion Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) took first place with 1147 and his 2005 IPC World Championship teammates T.J. Pemberton (Moore, Okla.) and Joseph Bailey (Flushing, Mich.) finished behind him in second and third place respectively with 1135 and 1127.

1. Daniel Wido (Shickshinny, Pa.) - 588
2. John Fleury (Westford, Vt.) - 583
3. Zachary Plannick (Coraopolis, Pa.) - 579

JOAD Female Junior Compound
1. Erika Anschutz (Grand Island, Neb.) - 583
2. Lindsay Christensen (Preston, Idaho) - 573
3. Kristin Sweet (Midway City, Calif.) - 568
