U.S. Claims 19 Gold Medals at Mexican Grand Prix

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2006 Mexican Grand Prix was held April 9-16 in Mexico City, with 250 archers competing from 10 countries. Thirteen U.S. recurve archers competed in the event with the U.S. taking home 19 gold medals, 32 medals total.

Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz.) had the best showing for the U.S., claiming gold for the Junior Boy’s Recurve category and also finishing the FITA in first place with a gold medal for each distance. Josh Anderson (College Station, Texas) finished with a bronze medal for the junior boys in the Olympic Round (OR) and took silver for each distance in the FITA.

Mandy Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) took home the gold in the Open Women’s Recurve category and also won a bronze medal at 70 meters in the FITA Round. Nichols’ sister, 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols, finished the FITA Round in first place with a total score of 1346 and won a gold medal for each distance. Jennifer finished fifth overall in the OR.

In the Senior Men’s Recurve category, two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) finished the FITA in first place with total score of 1318 and won a gold medal for each distance. He finished fifth place overall.

Rachel Caldwell (Ft. Collins, Colo.) won the bronze medal in the Junior Girl’s Recurve category after finishing the FITA in third place and winning a gold for the 70 meters, a silver for 60 meters and a bronze at each the 50 and 30 meters.

Brian Brodine (Rochester, N.Y.) took a gold medal in the FITA Round at 50 meters, finishing in fourth place. He finished the OR in ninth place.

In the team round, the U.S. men won the bronze medal by defeating El Salvador 223-202. The U.S. women finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match to Mexico.
