2005 U.S. Archery World Target Championship Team Announced

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 15, 2005) – The 2005 U.S. Archery World Target Team is now determined after the final day of competition at the World Target Team Trials, which were held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex. Four men and four women in both the recurve and compound bow categories will represent the U.S. June 20-26 at the 2005 World Target Championships in Madrid, Spain.

At 49 years of age, four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) led the way for the recurve men, finishing the tournament in first place with a final score of 3840. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) finished in second place with 3795 while Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) took third with 3698. Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas), who competed on the 2003 World Target Championship Team along with Johnson and Wunderle qualified for his second consecutive World Target Team after finishing the tournament in the fourth spot with a score of 3684.

On the women’s recurve side, top ranked 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), climbed back into the top spot today and finished the tournament in first place with a score of 3721. Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J), a native of the Republic of Georgia will represent the U.S. for the first time this June after finishing right behind Nichols in second place with a score of 3706. Ashley Kamuf (New Albany, Ind.) ended the tournament in third with 3607 and 51 year old three-time Olympian Janet Dykman (El Monte, Calif.) ending with a score of 3506, jumped into fourth place, earning a spot on the World Target Team.

Nichols and Dykman were both members of the 2003 World Target Championship Team as well as teammates at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine), who led the entire tournament for the compound men, finished the day on top with a score of 3926 securing his spot on the 2005 World Target Team. Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.) took second with a 3864 while Kevin Polish, a 22 year old wheelchair archer from Carmichaels, Pa., earned a spot on his first USA Archery World Team today after finishing the trials in third place with a score of 3856. Dee Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) ended the tournament in fourth place with 3845.

Cousins, Gellenthien and Wilde were all members of the 2003 Men’s Compound World Target Championship Team that won the team gold in New York City.

Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) led the way for the compound women after finishing the day with a score of 3456 while 2003 World Target Championship and 2005 World Indoor Championship double gold medalist and world record holder Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) shot her way to a second place finish and a spot on the 2005 World Target Team with a score of 3441. Sixteen year old Erika Anschutz (Grand Island, Neb.) landed a spot on her first senior world team, finishing in third place with 3437 and Christie Colin (Cape May, N.J.) took fourth with 3435. Zorn and Colin were teammates at the 2003 World Target Championships, where they won a gold medal in the team event.

Field cut to eight for final day of Archery World Target Trials

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 14, 2005) – The field was cut to eight men and eight women in both the recurve and compound bow categories today after the second day of round robin match competition at the 2005 Archery World Target Trials. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) remains in the lead for the recurve men, while Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.) jumped up to the top spot for the women’s recurve category. Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) is still in the lead for the compound men and Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) is now in first place for the compound women.

The World Target Trials, which are being held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex run through Sunday and will decide the team that competes at the 2005 World Target Championships in Madrid, Spain June 20-26.

The remaining eight archers in each category will advance to the final day of competition tomorrow. At the conclusion of the tournament tomorrow, points will be tabulated and the top four of the remaining eight men and women in each category will make up the 2005 World Target Championship Team.

Johnson, Nichols on Top Following First Day of Round Robin Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 13, 2005) – Round robin match competition started today at the Archery World Target Trials with four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) finishing the day on top for the recurve men, while 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) is in first place, dominating the tournament for the recurve women. The World Target Trials, which are being held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex run through Sunday and will decide the team that competes at the 2005 World Target Championships in Madrid, Spain June 20-26.

Johnson finished in first place ahead of two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) with a score of 2235 for the men’s recurve category. Wunderle finished the day with a score of 2203. Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) is in the third spot again with 2168, while Jason McKittrick (Holton, Ind.) finished the day in fourth place with 2153.

On the women’s recurve side number one ranked Nichols finished the day in the top spot with a score of 2190. Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.) is behind Nichols in second with 2155 while Ashley Kamuf (New Albany, Ind.) finished the day in third place with 2124 and Kate Anderson (Los Angeles, Calif) jumped into the fourth spot with 2070.

Due to several byes in the men’s and women’s compound categories in today’s round robin match competition, the compound rankings will not be available until after competition tomorrow.

Following the round robin match competition tomorrow, the field will be cut down to eight men and eight women in each category with the remaining archers moving on to the conclusion of the round robin matches on Sunday. At the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday, points will be tabulated and the top four of the remaining eight men and women in both the recurve and compound bow categories will make up the 2005 U.S. World Championship Team.

Cousins Sets World Record at First Day of World Target Trials

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 12, 2005) – Sixteen men and sixteen women in both the recurve and compound bow categories remain after the ranking round of the 2005 Archery World Target Trials with Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) setting a new world record in the male compound category. The World Target Trials, which are being held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex run through Sunday and will decide the team that competes at the 2005 World Target Championships in Madrid, Spain June 20-26.

The top 16 men and women with the highest scores in each category at the end of the day qualified to move on to the round robin matches, which will take place Friday and Saturday. Following competition on Saturday, the field will be cut down to eight men and eight women in each category with the remaining archers moving on to the conclusion of the round robin matches on Sunday. At the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday, points will be tabulated and the top four of the remaining eight men and women in each category will make up the 2005 World Target Championship Team.

Top-ranked two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) finished in first place today with a score of 1334 for men’s recurve. Forty-nine year old four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) finished right behind Wunderle with a 1332 and Joe McGlyn (Floral Park, N.Y.) will head into tomorrow’s round robin matches ranked third after ending the day with a score of 1302. Jason McKittrick (Holton, Ind.) finished the day in fourth place with 1282.

On the women’s recurve side number one ranked Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) finished the day in the top spot with a score of 1331. Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.) came in second with 1315 while Ashley Kamuf (New Albany, Ind.) finished the day in third place with 1291 and Many Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) right behind in fourth with 1285.

For the compound men, Dave Cousins shot a 1401 to end the day in first place, while setting a new 70-meter world record of 356. Roger Hoyle and Logan Wilde set the previous world record of 355 in 2001. Dee Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) finished in second place with 1391, while Kevin Polish (Pennsylvania) and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) finished right behind him with a score of 1389 taking third and fourth place respectively. Cousins and Dee and Reo Wilde were all members of the 2003 Men’s Compound World Target Championship Team that won the team gold in New York City.

On the women’s compound side, 2003 World Target Championship double gold medalist and world record holder Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) finished the day in first place with a score of 1393. Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) shot a 1382 to end the day in second, while sixteen-year-old Erika Anschutz (Grand Island, Neb.) finished in third with 1381 and Christie Colin (Cape May, N.J) finished in fourth with 1359.
